The annual college event is approaching-a large debate competition that Avneet has been preparing for, representing her class. As the day nears, the pressure from her family reaches a peak, and she begins to doubt her abilities. Her usual confidence wavers.
During the final debate practice session, Avneet falters. Her arguments lack the usual fire, and she struggles to find her voice. After class, Siddharth pulls her aside.
Siddharth: (firm but concerned) What's going on, Avneet? You're not yourself. This debate is in two days, and I know you're better than what you've been showing.
Avneet's frustration boils over, and she blurts out what's been on her mind.
Avneet: (angrily) What if I'm not? What if I fail? Everyone expects me to be perfect-to win, to excel, to make the right decisions-and I'm just... tired.
Siddharth is silent for a moment, studying her face. Then, in a rare moment of vulnerability, he speaks more gently than she's ever heard him.
Siddharth: (softly) Perfection is an illusion, Avneet. No one's perfect, not me, not you. What matters is the effort and the heart you put into what you do. You've got that in spades. That's why I push you.
Avneet looks at him, her defenses slowly lowering. She hadn't realized how much she had been expecting of herself-this impossible standard she was trying to meet.
Avneet: (quietly) You make it sound like I don't have to be perfect to be enough.
Siddharth's eyes soften further.
Siddharth: You don't. You just have to be you. That's more than enough.
For the first time in a while, Avneet feels a weight lift off her shoulders. She realizes now that the expectations she's been carrying-those of her family, her peers, even herself-aren't as important as she thought. What matters is staying true to what she believes in.
Avneet: (smiling faintly) I think I can do that.
Siddharth nods, giving her a reassuring look.
Siddharth: Good. Now go win that debate-not because anyone expects you to, but because you can.
