13: The Almost Confession

After class one day, Siddharth finds himself alone with Avneet. The room is quiet, the usual hum of student chatter gone. Avneet is gathering her things when Siddharth speaks, his tone more hesitant than usual.

Siddharth: (softly) Avneet, can we talk for a minute?

Avneet looks up, sensing something different in his voice. She nods, setting her bag down.

Avneet: Sure, what's up?

Siddharth hesitates, his mind racing. He doesn't know how to say what he's feeling-or if he should say it at all. But the tension between them has been building, and he knows he can't keep ignoring it.

Siddharth: (choosing his words carefully) I've been thinking... about how far you've come this semester. You've grown a lot-not just academically, but personally.

Avneet smiles softly, though she senses there's more behind his words.

Avneet: Thanks. That means a lot, coming from you.

There's a pause, and Siddharth feels the weight of what he's about to say. He's never let himself get this close to a student before, and it scares him. But with Avneet, it's different.

Siddharth: (quietly) You've challenged me too, you know. In ways I didn't expect.

Avneet looks at him, her heart starting to race. There's something in his eyes-something vulnerable, something she's never seen before. It makes her breath catch in her throat.

Avneet: (softly) What do you mean?

Siddharth opens his mouth to respond, but he stops himself. He can't do this. Not here, not now. The lines are too blurred, and he's afraid of what might happen if he crosses them.

Siddharth: (quickly shaking his head) Never mind. It's nothing.

Avneet frowns, sensing the shift in him. She doesn't push, but the moment lingers between them-unfinished, unresolved. They both know something has changed, but neither of them is ready to admit it yet.
