Chapter 37: The Accidental Pajama Dress

Vapor paced nervously in the living room, glancing at the clock. Tonight was a big night. He was heading over to Rosie’s for a sleepover—his very first at her house since they’d started dating. Being just 13 years old and Rosie already 16, the age gap was enough to make him feel self-conscious. Their relationship was friendly, sure, but he always felt like he had to prove he could keep up with her.

Tonight would be fine, though. Just a simple, fun night at Rosie’s house, no big deal, right?

As he finished packing up his overnight bag, Vapor realized he hadn’t grabbed any pajamas. His room was too much of a mess to go digging for a clean pair, so he decided to ask his older sister, Esper, for help.

Knocking lightly on her door, Vapor peeked inside. "Hey, Esper? Can I borrow some pajamas for tonight? I’m heading over to Rosie’s."

Esper, who was relaxing on her bed, raised an eyebrow at him. "My pajamas? Uh, Vap, don’t you think they might be a little… big? Or, y'know, not your style?"

Vapor shrugged. "I’ll take what I can get. I’m in a hurry."

Esper laughed softly and got up to rummage through her closet. "Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you." She pulled out something from the back of her closet—a silky, silver-laced pajama dress. "This should fit you. It’s a little fancy, but it’s comfortable."

Vapor blinked in disbelief. "Wait, hold up... a dress? I can’t wear that!"

Esper smirked, holding up the pajama dress for him to see. "It’s this or nothing, little bro. You’re the one who came to me last minute."

Vapor’s face turned bright red. "You’re kidding, right? I’m not wearing this thing to Rosie’s!"

Esper crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "It’s just a sleepover, Vap. You’re only going to be wearing it around Rosie. What’s the big deal?"

Vapor groaned. He couldn’t believe he was actually considering this. But with no other options, he snatched the dress from Esper and stuffed it into his bag.

"This is a nightmare," he muttered under his breath.

When Vapor arrived at Rosie’s house, he was greeted by her warm smile, as usual. "Hey, Vap! You ready for an awesome night?" Rosie asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Yeah," Vapor muttered, trying not to think about the embarrassing pajamas he had brought with him. "I guess."

Rosie didn’t notice his discomfort as she led him inside. The evening was full of fun—video games, snacks, and a movie. Vapor found himself relaxing, forgetting for a while about the impending doom of pajama time.

That was, until it got late, and Rosie stretched out, yawning. "We should change into our pajamas and watch one last movie before bed," she suggested.

Vapor’s stomach twisted. He hadn’t forgotten about the ridiculous outfit stuffed into his bag. Reluctantly, he grabbed his things and headed to the bathroom to change.

When he pulled out the pajama dress, he could feel his face heating up with embarrassment. The silky fabric shimmered in the light, and the lace detailing around the neckline and hem only made it worse. There was no way he was going to survive this night without some major teasing.

With a deep sigh, he slipped into the dress, feeling utterly humiliated. It fit him surprisingly well, which made things even worse. Staring at himself in the mirror, Vapor grumbled, "I’m never going to hear the end of this."

Bracing himself, Vapor stepped out of the bathroom and walked back into the living room where Rosie was waiting. Her eyes immediately widened when she saw him.

"Oh... my... god." Rosie clamped her hand over her mouth, trying to stifle her laughter. "Vapor, are you wearing a dress?"

Vapor groaned, crossing his arms over his chest in an attempt to hide the lace. "It’s not funny! I asked Esper for pajamas, and this is what she gave me. I didn’t have a choice!"

Rosie burst out laughing, doubling over on the couch. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry! It’s just... it’s so fancy! I’ve never seen you wear anything like that."

Vapor’s face burned red, and he glared at her. "This is so embarrassing. I can’t believe I’m wearing this in front of you."

Rosie wiped a tear from her eye, still giggling. "Hey, hey, it’s okay! It’s just us. I promise no one else will see you in it."

Vapor sighed, sitting down next to her. "Yeah, sure. Like you could guarantee that."

Rosie put an arm around him, smiling warmly. "Come on, Vap. You look... cute."

"I look ridiculous," Vapor muttered, staring at the ground.

Rosie leaned in closer, her laughter subsiding. "You’re way too hard on yourself. You’re adorable, even in a pajama dress." She poked his side playfully, making him smile despite himself.

"Yeah, yeah," Vapor grumbled, though he couldn’t help but feel a bit better with Rosie’s arm around him. He was still mortified, but at least she wasn’t making fun of him too harshly.

The night could’ve ended peacefully with just Rosie and Vapor laughing about the situation. But, of course, that was too much to ask for.

At around midnight, there was a loud knock at the door. Rosie’s neighbors—her two cousins—had come over unexpectedly to grab something they’d left earlier. Rosie opened the door without thinking, and Vapor, still in his silver-laced dress, was sitting right there in the middle of the living room.

The cousins stared at him for a good five seconds before bursting into uncontrollable laughter.

Vapor’s face turned bright red as he quickly tried to hide behind the couch. "Rosie! You said no one else would see!"

Rosie winced, clearly not expecting her cousins to show up. "I’m so sorry, Vap! I didn’t know they were coming over!"

One of the cousins pointed at Vapor, laughing so hard they were practically crying. "Nice dress, dude!"

Vapor groaned and buried his face in his hands. "This is the worst night of my life."

Rosie, trying not to laugh herself, quickly shooed her cousins away and shut the door. "I really didn’t mean for that to happen," she said, turning back to Vapor.

He glared at her, still mortified. "You are so wrong about no one seeing this."

Rosie sat down next to him, her expression softening. "Hey, it’s not that bad. They’ll forget about it by tomorrow."

"I won’t," Vapor grumbled, tugging at the hem of the dress.

Rosie chuckled, wrapping her arms around him and pulling him into a comforting hug. "You’ll live, Vap. And besides, I still think you look great."

Vapor sighed, resting his head against her shoulder. "You’re just saying that because you think it’s funny."

"Maybe," Rosie teased. "But I also think you’re pretty brave for rocking that dress."

Vapor rolled his eyes but couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. Despite the humiliation, being with Rosie made everything feel just a little bit better.
