Hope holds her hand out. I watch as she tries so hard to focus. The rock wiggles before exploding. She jumps and turns to me.
"I didn't try to."
"It's okay, Peanut."
I'm not really the best teacher. Annika offered to teach her the ways of her magic but Connor insisted it be me instead. He loves and trusts Annika but she's not just a Mikaelson, she's a Bardin too. Bardin magic is different than that of Mikaelson magic.
I love Hope and want to protect her from everything. There's still a part of me that knows my mother would've been a better teacher. It makes me feel shitty because Hope deserves a better teacher.
"Don't be sorry, Auntie Maddy." She smiles. "You're enough."
I kneel down to her. Hope is everything to me. Family is everything to me. It was instilled upon us as young kids. We have a family motto that has been passed down from generations. As Mikaelson's we do everything and anything from family.
"What did I say about reading minds?"
"Always ask."
A rule I don't even follow myself. I go into people's minds as I see fit. I want different for her. She's so gentle. She's nothing like me and I don't want her to be. We've had very different upbringings and that's a good thing. She's only eight, she doesn't need to know everything I did.
"You're sad."
I was her age when I lost my father. I lost two of the most important people in my life. I spent that summer in New Orleans. My mother thought it was a good idea since I started acting out.
It's the summer that changed everything. A dark spirit came after me. It wanted my power and wanted to take over my body. My father kept it from my mother. He insisted on fixing the problem himself.
Annika transferred the Hollow into him, knowing what he was planning to do. My last memory of him was him telling me that I was his everything. I know he loved Connor and Lydia but even they saw the clear favoritism he showed me. I'm the reason he died. He died for me.
The very same day I lost Elijah. He always had this very strong loyalty to my father of all his siblings. They made a pact a long time ago. They died stabbing each other in the heart with a White Oak stake.
Before they died Elijah wrote a letter to Connor. They knew of the upcoming birth of Connor's child. He called her our family's hope. She was a means to start over as Mikaelson's. Connor took the name to heart and decided to name her just that. Hope.
"You miss your dad?"
Hope never had the pleasure of meeting him. I know he would've loved her.
"Everyday."
"We can share mine."
I smile and move her hair behind her ears. She's so caring even at her young age.
"He's my brother. That's enough for me."
"I wish you were that gentle with me."
I stand up and look at Connor. Hope wastes no time running to him.
"When you're as cute as her, maybe I would be."
He flips me off subtly so Hope can't see. I bite my tongue. I try to watch my language as much as possible when I'm around her. He knows that which is why he's smirking. I twist my hand as his shoes magically tie together. He tries to take a step forward and lands on his face.
"Never insult a witch." I wink at Hope. "We always win."
I walk around his body. I continue to my car, stopping. I turn around, hearing rustling a good distance away. I walk back to Hope and Connor.
