"That little girl will be the death of us, Elaine!"
"She is just a baby."
"She is pure chaos! Being the Emerald Witch isn't enough.. she is the Tribrid."
"I won't let you have her."
"She will bring your death."
"So be it."
My eyes open. I sit up in bed. It seems every night since the news of Dahlia coming I've been hearing conversations that were not mine. I recognize one voice in all of them. My mother's. I haven't spoken to the dead in a long time. I refuse to.
The last time I did was when I did the spell that made Connor into an Advanced Werewolf. I spoke with my grandmother. Esther coached me through it since it was such a complex spell that hasn't been done in centuries.
Being the prophesied Emerald Witch has given me magic that hasn't been seen since the very first Bardin witch. My magic is near identical to that of Athena Bardin. I used to see visions of her in dreams when I was younger. They stopped when I gained full control of my powers.
It's why everyone was so afraid when they realized what I would become. Having that magic makes me powerful enough, but also being the Tribrid is overkill.
I'm one step away from becoming the full fledged Tribrid. It's something that I'm trying to postpone as much as I can. Part of me doesn't want to be it. I know that one day I will have to say goodbye to my siblings.
I was happy to have an eternity with my father. And then he died saving me. Having Rebekah and Kol isn't enough. I can't help but think that I will be alone for the rest of eternity.
Family is everything to me and one day I will lose mine. Annika has tried to assure me many times that it will be okay. I don't think it will be.
"Auntie Maddy!"
I'm snapped out of the prison that is my own head when Hope appears in my doorway. She looks sad.
"What's wrong?"
"I ran out of blue paint."
"Get dressed and we'll go to the store."
"Yay!"
She disappears. I get out of bed, looking at my desk. There's an envelope sitting on top of my book that wasn't there last night. I slowly walk towards it. My name is written neatly on the front.
I jump when my phone starts ringing. I walk towards it, answering the call.
"Did you get a creepy invitation in your room too?"
Lydia sounds scared.
"Yes.. please tell me you didn't open it."
"I wasn't going to touch it." She says. "Maddy, I can feel the magic on it."
Even though Lydia has never gave in to her magic, it's still second nature to her. She's not wrong though. The magic is intense.
"Don't touch it."
I hang up the call as Jeremy comes in with an envelope in his hand.
"Don't tell me Lyd got one too."
"Go over there." I say. "I'm taking Hope to the store for paint. Wait to open them until I'm back."
He nods and disappears down the hall. I change out of my pajamas just in time. Hope comes back into my room. I take one last look at the envelope before grabbing my purse. We get into my car and drive into town. She talks about her morning with Connor before he went to work. I try to engage in the conversation but my mind keeps going back to those envelopes.
