19. Escape

At the Lotus Pier, Lan Wangji looks out at the horizon and feels anxious as he can't wait to see Wei Wuxian as he hasn't seen his friend in months so his anxiety grows stronger day by day.

Lan Wangji has also not received Wei Wuxian's letters for a long time which makes his curiosity to see his friend even more intense.

Lan Wangji wanders around the Bloom Lotus Courtyard as he has to figure out a way to get out of the Lotus Pier and go to the battlefield in the border area to meet Wei Wuxian.

It is also time for Lan Wangji's second heat to arrive due to which his omega hormones now want to feel the scent of his alpha's pheromones, so anxiety begins to build up inside him and he wants to hug Wei Wuxian by hook or by crook.

Lan Wangji is taking to himself, “I can’t just sit here. I need to see him at any cost. Wei Wuxian hasn't written letter to me in a while and I'm afraid he might have been harmed by an enemy in the battlefield. If something happens to him, I can't sit here in peace so I'll have to go see him at least once.”

Lan Wangji looks around, making sure no one is watching then an idea strikes him.

Lan Wangji secretly sneaks into the storage area where supplies are being prepared for the soldiers at the border.

Lan Wangji is whispering to himself, “If I hide in the cart, no one will know. I know that bullock cart will reach the border area adjoining the war zone within a few days, till then I also keep some bread with me to eat.”

Lan Wangji climbs into a bullcart filled with supplies, covering himself with a blanket.

Lan Wangji's heart races with excitement and fear as he sneaks out of the Lotus Pier for the first time just to meet Wei Wuxian once.

Lan Wangji feels very sorry for upsetting the Jiang family but cannot control his emotions so he lies to Song Lan about the omega-heat so that no one will know where he has gone for the next three days.

The cart rumbles along the road to the border so Lan Wangji stays quiet, listening to the sounds of the journey.

Lan Wangji feels a mix of nerves and anticipation as he is thinking, “I hope Wei Wuxian is okay. I need to see him. Will he be happy to see me or will he start scolding me in front of everyone as usual? Anyway, his scolding is not going to make any difference to me now because he cheated me earlier and ran away from here, so because of him I have to lie to everyone."

The journey feels long, but Lan Wangji remains patient when the cart finally arrives at the battlefield, he carefully peeks out, making sure the coast is clear.

Lan Wangji slips out of the cart, quickly finding a soldier's uniform that he can borrow as he changes his clothes, adjusting the fabric awkwardly.

Lan Wangji is muttering to himself, “I hope this fits. I look ridiculous. Wei Wuxian, because of you I stole a soldier's uniform and now you have to pay for it. Once I find you I will beat you up so badly that you will be scared to even think of leaving me again."

Lan Wangji quickly then heads towards the tents, his heart pounding, as he walks, he tries to blend in, but he’s nervous.

Suddenly, Lan Wangji spots Xue Yang discussing strategy with some soldiers and a wave of happiness runs through his mind.

Lan Wangji's heart becomes happy because he knows that if Xue Yang is here then Wei Wuxian must also be somewhere nearby.

Lan Wangji approaches cautiously, hoping to get some information about Wei Wuxian.
