In the midnight, the headlights on the bridge glowed, but no vehicle was seen to pass.
Sanjay was in pursuit of his friend, Naksh, who was about twenty meters ahead. Naksh stopped in the middle of the bridge, completely fatigued. He took a deep breath to calm himself and walked to the railing of the bridge, which was wide enough to stand on. He stepped onto it.
"What are you doing, idiot?" Sanjay yelled at Naksh. Naksh heard his friend's voice and looked back with a composed smile, as if to show that this was what he had been waiting for all these days. Death.
Naksh closed his eyes and leaned forward. But Sanjay reached him just in time and, fortunately, grabbed his waist at the last second, pulling him back. Naksh fell hard on the ground with a thud. "Aaahhhh," he squeaked, but luckily didn't hit his head.
He winced and groaned in pain, touching his back.
"What's wrong with you, man?" Sanjay asked, trying to get him up.
"What? I'm trying to die, just let me," Naksh yelled, getting back on his feet. His face flushed because his back hurt, but he regained his composure and turned towards the railing again. He walked as if no one could stop him, and Sanjay gave him a weird look, grabbing him in a tight grip.
"Let me go!" Naksh snapped, trying to release himself from his grasp.
"At least tell me what happened before you die," Sanjay said, not letting go.
"Why? Will it fix anything if I tell you?" Naksh asked, frustrated.
"I know it won't fix it, but maybe we can figure something out. Just tell me what's going on, and then we'll talk about dying," Sanjay replied.
"You want to listen? Fine. I lost my job. He kicked me out," Naksh said, pausing his movements.
"He? Who?" Sanjay asked. Naksh looked at him, exasperated.
"My boss, who else?" he replied. Naksh's body hurt more now, not from the fall but because of Sanjay's tight grip. He put in so much effort, but everything was in vain. He sighed in frustration. "Stupid! At least release me now!"
"Oh, sorry!" Sanjay said as he let him go, and Naksh took a deep breath, feeling relieved.
"Now what is left to live for?"
"That's it? But you still have Survarnika, don't you? Marry her. Settle your life!" Sanjay asked. Naksh hesitated, and his face fell. He didn't say anything, but tears began to fall, which he wiped away with the back of his hand. Sanjay looked concerned.
"You have Survarnika, right?" Sanjay asked again.
Survarnika was Naksh's girlfriend. She was 22. It had been three years since they fell in love. Survarnika, the daughter of a rich man who ran the biggest mall in the city, and Naksh, from a poor family, were an unlikely pair. Despite their differences, Naksh's good looks and sense of humor won Survarnika over. Initially, Naksh was attracted to her beauty and wealth, but as time passed, his feelings grew deeper, and he truly fell in love with her.
One day, Survarnika told her father that she wanted to marry Naksh. Her father's first question was whether Naksh had a stable job, to which she confidently replied yes. Satisfied with the answer, he agreed to the match. However, Survarnika added that she wanted to wait until she completed her postgraduate studies in physics before getting married. And now she was doing her post-graduation.
"Survarnika's father found out I lost my job. He told her to stay away from me," Naksh said, his eyes a bit red.
"And what did Survarnika say?"
