The Queen who never was
She felt Melys aching in her bones as she watched her granddaughters following dutifully Jacaerys and Lucerys to the table.
The fire unquenched in her belly at the sight of Laena's trueborn daughters needing to be seen as the wives of Rhaenyra's bastards to inherit the seat that should've been theirs by right.
Vaemond had wanted to unseat her granddaughters all the same, at least Rhaenyra offered a better deal. Lucerys was young, Rhaena would become the true force behind Driftmark without issue and no matter how much acid would rise up her throat at the idea of the murderer of her son to sit on the Iron throne, it would be his son who would inherit it by all accounts and Laena's girl who'd be queen consort. Velaryon blood would sit on the throne.
Laenor would be avenged, she had promised herself. She would help his widow sit on the Iron throne, then she'd make sure her son sat in her place — claiming him as Laenor's son so that that way he'll go down in history — and make sure Laena's firstborn became the ruling power behind the Iron throne the same way Alysanne had been for Jaehaerys.
Laenor would be avenged.
Laenor would be avenged.
Laenor would be avenged.
Her son, her darling son, would be avenged. She sworn it by the Old Gods and the New, on her dragonblood, on her name, on her life.
If it was the last thing she managed to do, she had sworn, she would do it.
Her dark lilac eyes found Rhaenyra sitting comfortably next to her new husband, as he — Laena's husband — filled her plate for her.
She had never seen him being half as tender with Laena. It was his fault, her daughter had died so far from home...
Her children.
Her beloved children, all dead before her.
She was Rhaenys of House Targaryen, the Realm might have rejected her claim to the Iron throne, and yet here she stood when her children, supposed to inherit after her, laid beneath the waves.
She knew her words.
Fire and Blood.
She knew her children's words.
The Old, the Brave, the True.
She knew her words.
Ours is fury.
And she would stay true to all of them.
