The hidden dagger

"Do you really have to go?" Jaehaerys whined as he and his sister bid their farewell to her.

Princess Helaena caressed his silver-gold mane and then looked up at her "She won't stay away for long, will you cousin?"

It was jarring to hear constantly a Targaryen call her cousin, but since she had been recognized as lady Whent she had become cousin or cousin Ned to Helaena, Daeron and Aegon and even the queen Alicent called her, upon time, cousin.

"I hope not, your highness," Sansa assured "it's only a formality, really, but I need to take formal possession of the residence near Rushing Falls," she told her "and present myself to the lord Paramount as show of goodwill and fealty" she added "I'll be back to court as soon as I can" she added.

"Good," Helaena commented "because we will all miss you terribly"

Not everyone , Sansa thought sourly. The words must've been written on her forehead because Helaena grasped her hand in hers. It was surprisingly how little dragon queen's hands could be — but whereas Daenerys Targaryen's hand on her own had been almost condescending there was real warmth in Helaena's grip — and with those they commanded dragons, to ruin or to glory. But mostly to ruin.

"We all will miss you," the princess promised, her light lilac eyes begging her to see the truth of her words. Sansa nodded if only for show.

She knew that look on Aemond Targaryen's face, she had seen it more than once reflected on the mirror glass lately. Betrayal.

It made her miss her brother all the more.

Tell me who manipulated whom?

Do you have any faith in me at all?

She felt the tears gather at the corners of her eyes.

"It will be alright," Helaena, ever mindful and attentive to her emotive state "He just needs some time"

Sansa clenched her jaw and nodded. He might need all the time he wanted, but Sansa didn't have that luxury.

She was playing a game that, if played right could strengthen her House but making sure not to make too drastic of changes to ensure that the line continued as it ought to be so that her parents and her siblings were alive.

She was walking along an ever finer line than the one she had walked along before. It wasn't just only herself, it was the fate of her House and the North at stake.

Not for the first time Sansa wished she knew who Jon' mother had been to ensure that nothing could be done to her ancestor and thus put at risk her brother's life.

I am Sansa of House Stark, lady of Winterfell and princess in the North — she refused to believe Jon had actually bent the knee — I am Ned of House Whent. The wolf in the night and the bat in the shadow.
