I hadn't gotten my period for two months. Could I be pregnant? I decided to get checked without telling Rohan. If I am pregnant, he’ll be so happy. I’m only 23 and just lost my entire family, but maybe, if I’m pregnant, I could start my own small family. It won’t replace my parents, but I’d be a mom. And Rohan would be thrilled. We’d need to get married soon, but that’s not a problem—he’s my Rohan.

I arrived at the hospital and got my tests done. Now, I was sitting in the waiting area, nervously awaiting the results. Suddenly, I saw Priya walking toward me.

"Oh, hi Priya," I greeted her calmly.

"Sona, hi... how are you? I heard about your family. I’m really sorry for your loss. Are you doing okay?" she asked, her voice soft and full of concern.

"Yeah, I’m doing better now," I replied with a smile.

Priya glanced around and then asked, "Why are you here? Any medical problem? I don’t see Rohan with you. If you need me, I can stay..."

“No no, it’s nothing serious. I think... I might be pregnant. Just here to confirm,” I said, my voice was a bit uncertain.

Priya’s face shifted slightly—something between sadness and hesitation crossed. "Oh... okay," she said quietly, trying to mask her feelings. “If you’re alone, I can stay with you,” she offered, Yes she was sad.

Priya and I sat quietly together in the hospital's waiting area, the air heavy with unspoken thoughts. Trying to break the silence, I asked, “How’s life going, Priya?”

She sighed softly, offering a small, sad smile. “It’s… it’s good. Just doing my work, trying to cope with things, you know design, arts, shows and all.
Sona... A life I once imagined would be so different.” She paused for a moment, her gaze distant. “A life where I thought I’d be with Rohan—the guy I’ve loved since we were kids.”

I listened, was sure where she was going with this.

“My whole life,” she continued, “I was told, ‘Priya and Rohan are going to get married.’ It was like… I always saw him as my life partner. Everything revolved around that. But see, life changes so much,” she said, her voice breaking slightly. “I never wanted you to be part of his life. I wanted him for myself.”

I didn’t know how to respond, so I stayed quiet.

“I know I was the one between you two for a while, and I’m sorry for that,” Priya said, glancing at me with a touch of vulnerability. “But just know this, Sona—I loved him. I still do. And I love him more than you ever could. I’m sure you love him a lot, but… not more than me.”

Her words hit me hard. I knew she was being honest, laying her heart bare. She wasn’t trying to hurt me—she was just letting go of something she’d carried for years.

She glanced away, and then, almost in a whisper, she added, “The love Rohan has for you, Sona... if you could just add a little more to that, that’s my love for him.”

“I really hope you both have a great life together,” she added softly, her voice trembling.

The doctor called me in, and Priya, noticing my hesitation, offered, “Should I come too?”

I nodded, my throat dry. “Okay, come.”

We both sat in front of the doctor, my heart pounding in anticipation. I had been anxious but hopeful. The doctor looked at my report, then looked at me.

“You are not pregnant, Sonali.”

A wave of disappointment hit me. I wasn’t sure what to say, but I managed "It's okay".
