the metallic smell of disinfectant wafts through the cramped cellblock, mingling with stale air filled Adelaide's nose as she sat in the dimly lit cell as the metal walls seemed to close around her. The time in solitary seemed to stretch endlessly, each moment reminding her of her impulsive decision. The door started to creak open, two guards entering, dragging Adelaine to her feet. "Time to move, troublemaker."

they led her through the winding corridor of the ark, the sound of distant conversations in the other cells and the hum of machinery filling the air. "Like mother like daughter, right?" the guard laughed.

"fuck you." She spat making the guard to her right smirk. Finally, they stopped in front of a new cell. The door creaking open to reveal a girl, who looked about sixteen, lying on her bed.

"Blake, new roomate." He announced, voice strong, causing the girl to sit up.

"Great, just what i needed." She spoke, voice with a hint of sarcasm. Adelaide's gaze was fixed on the girl, furrowing her eyebrows as if she was trying to remember if she had seen her before. The guard took the handcuffs of the girls wrists before heading out. "Play nice."

Adelaine steps into the dimly lit cell, the heavy door clanging shut behind her. The sound echoing off cold, grey walls adorned with rusty pipes. The cell was small and stark, with cold metal walls that seemed to absorb the dim light from a single overhead fixture. The air was heavy and smelled faintly of disinfectant. Two narrow bunks were bolted to the walls, one above the other, with thin, worn-out mattresses that offered little comfort. A small, stainless steel sink and toilet were crammed into one corner, providing the bare minimum of privacy.

The floor was a dull, scuffed gray, and there was no window to let in natural light or provide a glimpse of the outside world. A small vent high on one wall circulated the air, but it did little to alleviate the oppressive atmosphere. The only personal touch in the cell was a few faded drawings and photos taped to the walls, remnants left by previous occupants.

Overall, the cell was a harsh, unwelcoming place, designed more for containment than comfort.

"Adelaine." she gave a gentle smile to try to loose the thick tension. "Sorry to intrude or whatever."

"Octavia." Octavia gave a weak smile.

Adelaine scoffed slightly, not at the girl or anything, she just couldn't believe she was there. She began sliding down the wall until she was sat on her bottom. The flickering fluorescent lights were making a slight buzzing noise. "So, what'd they get you in here for?"

"assaulting a guard." Adelaine scoffed, voice low, as she laid her head back against the cold metal wall. Octavia's eyes widened.

"Nice." She laughed.
"You're either brave or really stupid."

Adelaine shrugged.

"He was talking about my mom." she said as her eyes stood cold staring at the ground. Octavia's gaze softened. "I think i did what i had to do."

The girl nodded. "So, What'd they get you for?."

"Being alive." Octavia rolled her eyes. Adelaine looked up from the ground, furrowing her eyebrows.

Morning light filtered through the small vent, casting faint shadows on the walls. Adelaine stirred on her bunk, the thin mattress doing little to ease her discomfort. She glanced over at Octavia, who was already awake, sitting cross-legged on her bunk, staring at the ceiling. "Morning."

"Morning. Sleep well?" Octavia spoke.

"As well as you can in here."

They both chuckled, a rare moment of levity in their otherwise grim surroundings. Breakfast arrived shortly after, a tray slid through a slot in the door. They took their portions and sat on their respective bunks to eat. Sure, the food was not that great. But they didn't complain.

The conversation flowed naturally, each sharing snippets of their past lives, finding solace in the shared experience. The hours dragged on, filled with mundane routines. They cleaned their cell, exercised, and tried to pass the time with stories and makeshift games.

By midday, the monotony began to weigh heavily. Adelaine sat on the floor, tinkering with a small piece of metal she had found, while Octavia lay on her bunk, lost in thought. "Ever think about what you'd do if you got out?" Adelaine spoke up.

"All the time. First thing, I'd find my brother. Make sure he's safe." Adelaine hummed in response. She didn't know how it felt to have a brother but she felt how much Octvaia cared for him.

"It's been almost a year since i seen him."

The afternoon passed slowly, their conversations punctuated by long silences. As evening approached, they shared a simple dinner, the same bland food as every other day.

"You know, having someone to talk to makes this a little less unbearable." Octavia said as she bite into her food.

"Yeah, it does. We'll get through this. Together."

Night fell, and the cell grew quiet. They settled into their bunks, the dim light casting long shadows. Despite the harsh conditions, they found a small measure of comfort in each other's presence.

As they drifted off to sleep, the sounds of the Ark faded into the background, replaced by the steady rhythm of their breathing. They knew it was inevitable that they were going to get floated once they turn eighteen but they couldn't help but cling to the hope that one day, they would see the world beyond these walls once again.

Who knew the day was approaching quickly.
