The clock on the wall ticked steadily, marking the passage of time as Seungmin and Jeongin sat hunched over textbooks and notes spread across the coffee table. Jeongin's dorm room was a stark contrast to Seungmin's neat, pastel-themed space. Posters of rock bands and graffiti-style art covered the walls, clothes were strewn haphazardly over furniture, and the air held a faint scent of cigarette smoke that no amount of air freshener seemed able to mask.
Seungmin flipped through his economics textbook, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Okay, let's try this one," he said, pointing to a problem. "If the demand function for a product is P = 50 - 0.5Q, and the supply function is P = 10 + 0.5Q, how do we find the equilibrium price and quantity?"
Jeongin leaned over, his arm brushing against Seungmin's as he peered at the textbook. He was silent for a moment, his eyes scanning the problem. Then, he grinned. "Easy. It's like a fucked-up game of tug-of-war."
Seungmin blinked, turning to look at Jeongin with confusion. "What? How does that help?"
"Look," Jeongin said, grabbing a blank sheet of paper. He quickly sketched out two stick figures pulling on a rope. "Demand is pulling one way, supply the other. The equilibrium is where they're both pulling equally hard and the rope stops moving."
Despite himself, Seungmin couldn't help but laugh. "Jeongin! That's... actually kind of helpful. But how do we calculate it?"
Jeongin rolled his eyes. "You set the equations equal to each other, dumbass. 50 - 0.5Q = 10 + 0.5Q. Solve for Q, then plug that back into either equation to get P."
Seungmin's eyes widened. "Oh! I get it now. So Q would be... 40? And then P would be 30?"
"Give the man a prize," Jeongin drawled, but there was a hint of pride in his voice. "See? Not so hard when you think about it like two drunk assholes fighting over the last beer."
They continued like this for another hour, tackling increasingly complex problems. Jeongin's explanations, while crude, were surprisingly effective.
"Okay, here's a tricky one," Seungmin said, reading from his notes. "Explain the concept of opportunity cost and give an example."
Jeongin snorted. "That's easy. Opportunity cost is what you give up to get something else. Like, right now, I'm giving up the opportunity to smoke and look cool to help your nerdy ass study."
Seungmin rolled his eyes. "Jeongin, be serious."
"I am being serious," Jeongin retorted. "Okay, fine. Here's another example. Let's say you have the choice between studying for an extra hour or going out with your friends. If you choose to study, the opportunity cost is the fun you could've had with your friends. If you choose to go out, the opportunity cost is the potential better grade you could've gotten."
Seungmin nodded slowly. "That... actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Jeongin."
As they moved on to Korean history, Seungmin was surprised to discover that Jeongin had a wealth of knowledge on the subject. "Let's talk about the Joseon Dynasty," Seungmin suggested. "Can you explain the significance of King Sejong the Great?"
