Chapter 34

Very soon, the camper roared to life, the engine's hum the only sound breaking the silence between Yeon Jun and Diana. As they pulled away from the campsite, Danny stood in the rearview mirror, waving until he became a tiny dot in the distance. Diana raised her hand half-heartedly in response, but her eyes were fixed on the road ahead.

The silence inside the camper was palpable, thick like the humid air before a thunderstorm. The road stretched out ahead of them, lined with palm trees and coastal views, but the beauty of it all seemed lost in the tension between them. Yeon Jun kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel a little too tight.

Diana sat quietly, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on her knee. It felt like they were both waiting for the other to say something, to break the silence that had settled between them like a heavy blanket. But neither of them did.

Finally, Yeon Jun reached out, his hand brushing against hers. He hesitated for a moment before his fingers intertwined with hers. Diana's breath hitched, and she looked at him, the tiniest flicker of relief in her eyes.

"Are we okay?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

He forced a small smile. "Yeah. We're okay."

Diana's shoulders relaxed a fraction, and she squeezed his hand. They continued down the highway, the silence now filled with a quiet understanding, even though they both knew nothing was truly resolved.

That night, they parked at a secluded spot by the beach, the soft sound of waves crashing against the shore. The atmosphere inside the camper was subdued. They lay on the small bed, facing each other, their bodies close but not touching.

For a long time, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the rhythmic crashing of the waves outside, a reminder of how everything kept moving, even when life felt like it was at a standstill.

Diana's eyes were wide open, staring at him, and he could feel the weight of her gaze. He reached out, brushing his fingers against her cheek, and she closed her eyes, leaning into the touch.

"Can we just stay like this?" she whispered.

They couldn't. But for her, he nodded, pulling her close. "Yeah. We can."

They lay there, spooning, but sleep evaded them both. The air was heavy with unspoken words, but they didn't have the energy to voice them. They just held each other, letting the silence say everything they couldn't.
