Y/n's POV

I am so thankful Quinn Carson. She was actually nice to me and said she'd show me around. But, of course, none other than Draco Malfoy decides to intercept our little Hogwarts tour—before we even got to leave the common room.

But we chased him off, I suppose. What a git he is.

"Is he always like that?" I ask as Quinn as we stroll down the hallways. It's far past curfew, but who cares anyway?

"Who? Malfoy? Oh, yes. He never passes up a chance to bully someone. You're like fresh meat. A new victim. You know nothing about him or this school or anything here. It's best just to ignore him." She says. I nod.

That might not go as planned...I know I won't be able to ignore him.

"So..." Quinn says. "What are you doing here? All the way from Massachusetts?" she asks and I sigh.

I'm not going to tell her that my mother died about a year ago and my dad had been missing ever since. "I mean, why not? It's a nice change of pace." I shrug and hope she doesn't say anything else.

No such luck. "That's it? You just wanted to move? That can't be right." She laughs nervously.

I clear my throat. I don't want to lie to her, she seems nice. But I don't know her. "It's complicated." I see out of the corner of my eye Quinn nodding.

"It's okay. You don't have to tell me," I'm grateful she said that.

She continues to show me around the castle. She pointed out the moving staircase, statues and shortcuts to classes.

Her skin looked tanned, like she was somewhere sunny over the summer holiday. Her hair was a dark brown and fell just past her collarbones and crazy green eyes. About the same height as me and had the same attitude as me. We clicked right away.

She had noticed me in our dorm (which we shared with a few other girls) and offered to show me around the castle and, "get the first rule-breaking of the year out of the way" and go out past curfew.

I found out from our scandalous-after-curfew-tour that she has two older brothers named Kenny and Calum. Both were already out of school and moved out. Quinn is the youngest and says she feels like an only-child since both her brothers are off on their own. But she doesn't mind. Her favorite color is red and loves music. She wants a dog, but her dad is allergic. It's little facts, just getting to know each other.

The whole tour, I just smile and nod, avoiding the topic of conversation of my own family and past. I don't mind listening to Quinn's stories and history.

..........

Once we get back to the common room, it almost 1 in the morning so everyone has already tucked into their beds, sleeping.

Quinn does the same as everyone else, while I have trouble falling asleep. I pull out my leather notebook and take my quill and ink and begin writing.

Dear mom,

I made it to Hogwarts. There's this girl, Quinn, who is nice and I think we'll be good friends. A boy, too, his name is Malfoy seems to like to taunt people. Quinn told me to just ignore him, but I think we both know I won't do that. I can't do that.

Still no word from dad. I wish you were here. You would know how to find him. He wouldn't be gone if you were here.

Classes start tomorrow and, merlin, I hope the teachers like me. I hope I don't fail. I hope Quinn actually likes me and isn't just being nice. I hope dad comes back. I hope for so many things I can't have.
