Song for this chapter: Everything Has Changed - Taylor Swift (ft. Ed Sheeran)
Alex stood in the hallway, his eyes fixed on the wedding photo that hung on the wall. It was taken during a perfect summer afternoon, both of them smiling, hand in hand. George was laughing, his hair tousled from the breeze, while Alex gazed at him like he was the only person in the world. The sunlight had bathed everything in a golden hue, almost as if the universe had paused to capture that moment of happiness. Now, everything felt distant—like the warmth from that day had been replaced with a chill that seeped into their home. His thumb instinctively brushed the cool metal of his wedding ring, a nervous habit he'd developed over the past few months. Whenever the arguments would escalate, whenever the silence between them stretched too long, he'd fiddle with it, as if to remind himself of the commitment they had made.
The door clicked open, and George stepped into the entryway, the sound of his keys hitting the table breaking the silence. Alex didn't turn immediately, taking a deep breath before he finally faced him. George had that same look—tired, worn down by the tensions that had become too frequent between them. Yet, there was something else in his eyes. A hint of recognition, of concern. He had noticed Alex's thumb circling the ring again.
"Long day?" George's voice broke the quiet, low and tentative, like he wasn't sure how to approach after their most recent argument.
Alex nodded. "Yeah, something like that."
George's gaze flickered to Alex's hand, catching the movement. "You're doing it again," he said softly.
Alex froze for a moment, feeling exposed. He stopped fidgeting and crossed his arms awkwardly. "I don't even notice anymore," he mumbled.
"You always do that when you're stressed."
There it was—the care that still lingered between them, hidden beneath layers of frustration and unspoken words. George still saw him, still knew the small things that no one else would.
"I guess it's been a stressful few months," Alex admitted, the tension hanging between them like a thick fog.
George moved closer, leaning against the wall just next to Alex, his arms crossed loosely over his chest. His eyes softened as he looked at the wedding photo too, the warmth of the memory still flickering beneath the surface.
"You were so happy that day," George murmured, his voice almost wistful.
Alex's gaze followed George's, lingering on the photo, and he let out a quiet sigh. "We both were."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. They both stood there, staring at the image of who they used to be, the version of themselves that felt untouchable by arguments over racing schedules, household chores, and the petty frustrations that had built up over time. But those two men in the photo—they were still here, underneath it all.
"Remember what you said to me that day?" George's voice broke the silence again, and there was a faint smile on his lips as he spoke. "You said, 'I've never felt more sure of anything in my life.'"
Alex's chest tightened at the memory. He had meant it with every fibre of his being. The day they got married, there had been no doubts, no hesitations. Just love—simple and pure.
George turned his head to look at Alex now, his expression more open, vulnerable. "I gave my last name to you, Alex. It was the greatest thing I ever did."
The words hit Alex harder than he expected. He'd changed his name after the wedding—Russell, in every aspect of his personal life. In the racing world, he was still Albon, but with George, with their families, with their friends, he was Alex Russell. It had been a gesture of love, of unity, and hearing George say those words now, it reminded him of everything that still tied them together.
