Before their divorce, Madelynn and Andrés had been inseparable, the perfect picture of love. Like any couple, they had their disagreements, but they always found a way to reconcile. On one particular night, they lay peacefully in each other's arms, the soft glow of moonlight streaming through the window. Everything seemed calm and serene until their 7 months old son, Duncan, broke the silence with his cries.
Madelynn sighed softly, exhaustion tugging at her, while Andres groaned, pulling himself reluctantly out of bed, irritated at the disruption of his much-needed sleep.
"Go back to sleep, love, I got this," she said reassuringly with a smile, gently kissing Andrés on the forehead before getting out of bed and heading towards the nursery, her long legs moving swiftly yet quietly on the cool wooden floor.
Grumbling under his breath, he couldn't help but appreciate her selflessness, wishing he could do more to ease her burden. "Thanks, Madelynn," he muttered, rubbing a hand over his face before lying back down, trying to ignore Duncan's distant cries.
Madelynn scooped up little Duncan, cradling him against her chest, whispering soothing words and softly humming a lullaby as she gently rocked him back and forth, her amber eyes reflecting the love she felt for the child.
Andrés listened to Madelynn's soothing melody from the bedroom, his agitation fading as he admired her maternal strength, feeling a pang of guilt for his initial irritation.
"Shh, little one, it's okay," she cooed, pacing around the room and gently patting Duncan's back, her heart swelling with love as she looked at his peaceful, sleepy face.
With a sigh, Andres sat up in bed, his military-trained ears picking up Duncan's quiet whimpers. "Need any help?" he called out, concern etched on his face despite the fatigue.
As she continued to rock Duncan, Madelynn glanced over at the doorway where Andrés stood, silhouetted by the hallway light, and mouthed a silent 'thank you', her amber eyes sparkling with gratitude before turning her attention back to their son, continuing to hum the lullaby as she swayed rhythmically.
He nodded in understanding, watching them for a moment longer before retreating back to bed, feeling a deep sense of protectiveness wash over him. Once Madelynn returned Duncan to his crib, Andrés pulled her back into bed, wrapping his arms around her protectively, whispering, "You're doing great," in her ear, his thumb brushing away a stray strand of hair from her cheek, his thoughts filled with admiration.
Smiling at Andres' supportive gesture, she snuggled closer, whispering, "Couldn't do it without you," her heartbeat slowing as she nestled into his embrace, feeling safe and loved despite the challenges of parenthood.
The following morning, Madelynn woke up early, her eyes sparkling with determination, quickly preparing breakfast for the family before starting on a DIY project she planned to surprise Andrés with later that day.
Andrés, still half-asleep, groggily stumbled into the kitchen, his eyes immediately drawn to Madelynn's determined expression as she cooked breakfast, smirking inwardly at her secretive nature, but deciding to keep quiet for now, not wanting to spoil whatever surprise she had in store.
"Morning, sleepyhead," she greeted him cheerily, handing over a steaming cup of coffee with a mischievous wink, knowing full well that he wasn't a morning person but would appreciate the caffeine boost.
"Mornin'," he grunted, accepting the coffee gratefully, taking a sip before planting a gentle kiss on her cheek, already feeling more awake due to the familiar taste of black coffee.
"How did you sleep?" she asked, genuinely interested in how he was doing despite the lack of sleep from the previous night, her tone filled with warmth as she continued preparing breakfast for them and their son.
