Probably at that moment the whole world stopped, as if only these two were in the bar and no one else. So much is read in their glances, it seems that all these years never happened: they understand each other as before. Then one glance was enough, and words were not needed.
They look at each other for an indecently long time. There is tension in the air. People around them feel awkward and uncomfortable. The music in the background changes to something more cheerful. Freen gives in first: she blinks, and then, smiling weakly, looks away for a moment, takes a breath and, with a same smile, returns to the green eyes.
"You're here" the girl says timidly, raising her palm somewhere into the void. Then she straightens a strand of hair, placing it behind her ear, and looks at the brown-haired girl again. It seems that girls forget that they are not alone. But at the moment this is the least of their worries. "And you look beautiful" Freen adds a little more quietly, looking at Becca with the same warmth and tenderness. Like before...
Becca swallows, looking at the brunette with a concerned look. There is fear in her eyes. She still doesn't fully realize that she is seeing her again. It's like all the words are stuck in her throat and she doesn't know what to say. Hands begin to tremble treacherously. She worries, is afraid, for a moment she feels a thrill throughout her body, so familiar, but forgotten. She feels like there is a whole hurricane inside her, but everything outside is frozen, and she doesn't understand what to do next. Fear takes over. Becca doesn't notice that she's been silent for longer than expected. "Say something" the brown-haired girl scolds herself. But she's so scared. It's scary that if she says something wrong, Freen will leave. Again. Or she won't say anything, like on that fateful day, and Freen will leave anyway.
"I'm here" the girl smiles weakly, not taking her eyes off the brunette. She wants to admire Freen as much as the girl allows. She's truly beautiful now, and Becca can't help but notice. "And you're incredibly beautiful..." she says the obvious.
Freen felt as if someone had poked or pinched her, trying to open an old wound that she had tried so hard to numb. It's like everything is starting again. Emotions overwhelm her. Butterflies appear in her chest and stomach, just like seven years ago. Freen still can't believe her eyes that this isn't all a dream. Becca is here, in front of her, at arm's length, and if she wants, she can touch her. But she is so afraid of scaring her away, of ruining the moment.
"Becca, I need to talk to you" everything returns to its place: the music becomes louder, and people's conversations begin to reach their ears. A dark-haired woman in light jeans and a shirt appears on the horizon and takes the brown-haired girl under the elbow. Freen turns her gaze to the stranger. Becca doesn't seem to feel it, she continues to stare at Freen, not noticing how the latter is looking at the woman who approached them. "I received a call from New York..."
Becca comes to her senses a little and tears her gaze away from the brunette. She finally pays attention to her friend, who is telling her something, but Becca still doesn't listen to her.
"What, sorry?" she asks confusedly.
"I received a call from New York" the friend repeats, looking at the display of her phone. The woman mutters something incomprehensible. As she finishes fiddling with her phone, she notices someone staring at her. The woman looks up and freezes. Seriousness immediately appears in the dark-haired girl's gaze; she knows who is standing in front of her. "Oh" is the only thing the woman says, looking at Freen.
"Oh" Freen repeats. There is a barely noticeable smile on her face. "I think you all already know who I am"
The dark-haired girl glances at Becca, and she glances at her. The friend reads the answer in the green eyes and turns to the brunette with understanding.
