CHAPTER TWENTY SIX: LETTING GO
1 MONTH LATER....
Heeseung stood in front of the large window, the city skyline blurred by the rain pouring outside. The weight of his decision hung heavily in the air, suffocating him. He had spent countless nights thinking about this, about Jaeyun, and about the chain of events he had set in motion that tore their lives apart.
Jaeyun, with all his innocence and purity, had been dragged into Heeseung’s chaotic world. A world of lies, power, and betrayal. Heeseung had been selfish—he had wanted to keep Jaeyun by his side, no matter the cost. But now, as he stared out into the dark night, he knew he couldn’t hold on any longer. He had to let him go.
He turned around when he heard footsteps approaching, his heart sinking when he saw Jaeyun enter the room. The younger man’s face, though calm, held a flicker of hope, something Heeseung knew he was about to crush.
"Heeseung, you called for me?" Jaeyun’s voice was soft, unsure.
Heeseung clenched his fists, trying to steady his emotions. "Jaeyun, there’s something I need to tell you." His voice was barely above a whisper.
Jaeyun frowned, stepping closer. "What is it? You’re scaring me."
Heeseung took a deep breath and forced himself to meet Jaeyun’s eyes. "I’m letting you go."
The silence that followed was deafening. Jaeyun blinked, not understanding. "What?"
"I’m letting you go, Jaeyun," Heeseung repeated, each word feeling like a stab to his own heart. "I can’t keep you here anymore. You deserve more than this—more than me."
Jaeyun’s confusion deepened, and he shook his head slightly, trying to grasp what Heeseung was saying. "What are you talking about? Why would you say that?"
"You don’t need to be trapped here anymore. The company—it’s yours. I’ve made sure of that. Your father is behind bars for what he did to you. I made sure he paid for everything," Heeseung explained, his voice thick with emotion. "But now, you’re free. You don’t need to be tied to me anymore."
Jaeyun stood frozen, his heart pounding in his chest. "You’re just going to... let me go? After everything?"
Heeseung nodded, his expression unreadable. "You deserve to be free, Jaeyun. To live your life the way you want. I can’t keep you here."
Jaeyun’s emotions boiled over. The hope he had been harboring, the acceptance he had finally started to find for his feelings toward Heeseung, was now shattering before his eyes. Without thinking, Jaeyun’s hand shot out, slapping Heeseung hard across the face.
"You’re the reason I’m like this!" Jaeyun shouted, his voice filled with hurt and anger. "You’re the reason everything fell apart! You made me feel this way, and now you’re telling me it’s over? After everything you’ve done to me, you think you can just let me go?"
Heeseung didn’t move. The sting of the slap was nothing compared to the agony tearing through his chest. He deserved every bit of Jaeyun’s anger, and more. "I’m sorry," he whispered, his voice breaking.
Jaeyun’s tears flowed freely now, his body shaking with rage and heartbreak. "You think sorry is enough? You ruined my life, Heeseung. You dragged me into your world, made me feel things I never wanted to feel, and now you’re telling me it’s all for nothing?"
Heeseung’s silence spoke volumes. He stood there, taking Jaeyun’s pain head-on, knowing that nothing he said would ever make up for the damage he had caused.
Jaeyun stared at him for a long moment, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. He had thought—no, he had hoped—that despite everything, Heeseung cared for him. That maybe, just maybe, they could figure it out. But now, he realized that Heeseung was pushing him away.
With a last, heartbroken glance, Jaeyun stepped back. "You’re a coward, Heeseung," he said softly, his voice filled with sorrow. "You can’t face what you feel, so you’d rather throw me away."
Heeseung’s eyes burned with unshed tears, but he stayed silent, knowing Jaeyun’s words were true.
Without another word, Jaeyun turned on his heel and stormed out of the mansion, the door slamming shut behind him. The sound echoed in the empty room, leaving Heeseung standing alone, his heart in pieces on the floor.
For a moment, Heeseung simply stood there, numb. The overwhelming emptiness that settled inside him was unbearable. He had done what he thought was right, what he believed was best for Jaeyun. But now, watching him walk away, Heeseung wondered if he had just made the worst mistake of his life.
The rain outside continued to fall, mirroring the tears that finally spilled from Heeseung’s eyes. He had let Jaeyun go—but at what cost?
---
As Jaeyun sped away from the mansion, the weight of everything Heeseung had said crashed down on him. His chest tightened with a mixture of anger, betrayal, and heartbreak. He slammed his fist against the steering wheel, cursing Heeseung for everything—for the lies, the manipulation, and for daring to make him feel something so deep only to tear it all apart.
He had wanted to hate Heeseung, but over time, those feelings had shifted. Heeseung had become more than the man who had ruined his life—he had become someone Jaeyun thought he could care about. Someone he had started to love. But now, Heeseung had thrown it all away.
The rain blurred his vision, but Jaeyun didn’t care. He was heartbroken, and nothing Heeseung could say would fix that now.
MEANWHILE
the atmosphere was equally tense inside Sunghoon’s mansion. Sunghoon paced back and forth, anger burning inside him for reasons he couldn’t even fully comprehend. His mind was racing, his emotions spiraling out of control. Sunoo sat on the edge of the bed, watching him carefully, his usual sarcastic demeanor barely hiding the pain he carried.
"What's your problem?" Sunoo finally muttered, knowing full well that poking Sunghoon’s temper was dangerous, but unable to help himself. "You’re always angry about something. It's pathetic."
Sunghoon froze, his eyes darkening as he turned toward Sunoo. "You think you can talk to me like that just because you’ve slept with me?" His voice was low, filled with a dangerous edge. "You think that gives you the right to say whatever you want?"
Sunoo smirked bitterly. "Please. You’re the one who’s pathetic, Sunghoon. You can’t even face your own feelings."
In a flash, Sunghoon grabbed the knife that was sitting on the nearby table and pressed it against Sunoo’s neck, his hand trembling slightly. The cold steel against Sunoo’s skin sent a chill down his spine, but he refused to show fear.
"Just do it," Sunoo hissed, his eyes locked on Sunghoon’s. "Kill me. I don’t have anything left. You’ve taken everything from me already." His voice wavered as he continued, "If you don’t kill me, I swear, I will."
Sunoo’s hand shot up, grabbing the knife from Sunghoon in one swift movement. The blade glinted in the dim light as they struggled for control of it, and in the chaos, the knife sliced across Sunoo’s hand. Blood welled up, staining the floor beneath them.
For the first time, Sunghoon’s anger faltered. He watched in horror as the blood dripped from Sunoo’s hand, and panic set in. "Sunoo... I’m sorry," Sunghoon whispered, his voice filled with genuine fear. He reached out to try and take the knife back, "no sunoo..dont" sunoo still had the knife on his neck. And that's what
sunghoon was defnately scared of
before Sunghoon could react, Sunoo plunged the knife into Sunghoon’s leg, sending him crashing to the floor in pain. Sunghoon groaned, clutching his injured leg, but he didn’t chase after Sunoo as the latter ran out the door.
He let him go. He deserved it.
Sunghoon lay there on the cold floor, the pain in his leg nothing compared to the pain in his chest.
