Berlin May 10th, 1945
People rushed in the hallways of the makeshift hospital. Somehow during the commotion of the Berlin Invasion, Nikolai was found by the Soviet Army and was taken into custody. After decades of hiding in the United States they finally caught him. Now he will never be able to come back home.
Their home, but what use of a home if the person you love isn't there.
The Soviet Army also liberated a few concentration camps and hidden laboratories in the city as well. They found Felix and Nikolai's kids in one of those godforsaken places. All 15 of them.
During one of Nikolai's visits to his mother's grave in Kyiv, he brought their kids with him. Felix stayed back in order to look after his papa, since his health had been on the decline. It was on that fateful visit that the invasion of the Nazis took place. And took all their kids.
So now he was here. To be honest, he believed they would be in the States and Felix coddling all of their kids kissing their foreheads and playing lullabies to ease their nerves.
But they weren't, and Felix was gone. Forever.
Nikolai shuddered in agony. He watched it. He watched him die right in front of him. He saw Felix rush in front of him and take the bullet. Too bad the one who shot it was like them. He held Feli in his arms. His eyes cried tears and blood since his right eye had been gouged out. He cried, shouted, begged him not to leave. HE NEEDED HIM!!!! HE NEEDED FELIX HE NEEDED HIS HUSBAND HE NEEDED HIS EVERYTHING HE WAS EVERYTHING TO HIM!!!!!!
And he was gone just like that. Felix looked so sad and so so scared. He tried to be there for Nikolai, tried to console him, but it was hard when your life was being drained by every drop of blood spilt. He made him promise to protect their kids, to give them happiness to the best of his advantage, and for Nikolai to live. To live for their kids, to wait just a little bit longer. He told Nikolai he loved him, and that he was sorry.
Then he was gone.
"Nikolai Kuznetsov." A woman adorning a nurse's outfit spoke to him in Russian. Her face was stone cold and bored. Nikolai looked towards her and darkened his face.
"Yes, that is me."
"Your children's results came back. They are healing speedily and will be approved to go back to Russia in 2 weeks."
"But they are Americans. We have a home there. You can't take them away from their home!" Nikolai stood up to the best of his abilities. His hands were cuffed to the arm of the chair. 'Extra precautions due to being mentally unstable' they said.
She sneered. "They were citizens of the Soviet Union first. So unless you don't wish to lose custody and have them be raised by the government, I suggest you comply and listen to the rest of what I have to say."
He sat back down to his original state of numbness and despair. He couldn't go back home. During the war his papa passed away and was buried in New Hope's cemetery. None of them could go to his funeral. Felix cried for days in his tent with Nikolai, he was like the father he never had. Charlie, Felix's friend said he would move in to their house until they come back. No matter how long it took.
The nurse continued on with the children's report. "Unfortunately," Nikolai's head snapped up to her. Just when he thought this was the worst, luck decided to kick his a** once more. "due to the excessive and chronic torture and pain your children was exposed to, they have obtained amnesia. Usually when this happens with children they tend to forget the traumatic event, but since the trauma was chronic they have forgotten everything before we had taken them in."
His world came crushing down once more. They forgot. They have forgotten their life, their life with him and Felix. Oh God, they have forgotten Felix. Their favorite person, the one who would sing them to sleep. Their dad who loved them unconditionally since the first time he saw them. They don't remember him. Tears poured out of Nikolai's eyes in fat drops. He trembled violently.
"The amnesia is most likely temporary, if you give them triggers to remember by. Unfortunately for you they will not be near any triggers as long as they stay in the Soviet Union for as long as it stands. Due to their tortured induced amnesia we have had the honors of telling them their backgrounds." Nikolai stopped trembling. He slowly looked up at her to see her smiling smugly.
"What did you tell them?"
"We," She stood up taller with pride. "told them that they were proud citizens in the great empire of the Soviet Union. How we have beat the Nazis and soon destroy our enemies and the 'stain of the human race' Americans. We also told them how their mother has passed away during the war due to heartbreak of losing her children."
Nikolai tried to lunge at her. His eyes were wild and his mouth was contorted to a snarl. She scoffed at the display.
"If they are going to be ideal citizens of our great Soviet Union they need to be taught our ways. They don't need the knowledge of your little American wh*re to taint their minds."
A metal cuff broke as he grabbed for her collar and drew her close.
"Call him that again I dare you." He threatened. She scoffed.
"Threaten all you like. What's done is done and there's nothing you can't do that won't leave them as orphans once more." She tore off his hand from her and brushed her uniform with her hands. "Now a soldier is going to come here to lead you to your children. I suggest you don't say anything that doesn't send you to the gulag. You and your children will be sent in three weeks to a house in Moscow where you'll be monitored." With that said, she clicked her heels and strode off. Leaving him to be alone with all the devastating news.
..................................................
Nikolai had been able to see his children for the past few days. Sure enough, none of them recognized him or remembered their past. They held onto what the Soviets told them as the solid truth. Dmitri was the one who took their words to heart and now utterly despised the Americans.
This news shattered whatever was left of his torn heart. Dmitri had a bond with Felix like no other, and for him to now hate anyone who was American...
The other children weren't as intense as Dmitri, but most have started asking questions about their mother. Of course, Nikolai had yet to answer any of their questions and would just look off into the distance. Nikolai's daughter, Dima from Georgia, had yet to talk or acknowledge anyone. Occasionally she would stare blankly at Nikolai, but that was it.
Nikolai was able to attend Felix's funeral, and stayed by his coffin until it was sent back to the States where he would be buried near Nikolai's papa. He managed to keep his ukulele that was still in custody of the Americans. Charlie had even sent some keepsakes like toys for the children and photos for Nikolai. The Americans asked him if he wanted his ring back from Felix, but he refused. To him, no one would ever take on the title of spouse in his stead, he was the one and only.
The children were discharged and were being sent to Moscow. Another child was being sent there along with them. Supposedly he had been discovered as a sub human from Berlin when he wasn't blown to bits from the grenade stuck onto his back by other Nazi soldiers. His twin brother was being sent somewhere else in the UK. So now he had to take care of 16 children. Alone.
Late one night as he got up to leave the room the children were staying in. They had to leave the next morning for Moscow. As he walked out to the hallway, a little figure stood at the end. Dima was in her night gown and held up a journal with tears streaming down her face. He walked over to try to console her, but she shook her head and stuck the notebook into his face. He stepped back to read it.
Inside the notebook was a sentence and a question written in English.
I remember everything papa. Where's daddy?
