Every year, this day brought a very particular mood from Jenna—snarky remarks, deadly glares, and the occasional mutter under her breath. Their kids were at school, and Natasha had woken up to the sounds of clothes aggressively being tossed into the laundry hamper. She could hear Jenna moving about, and when she went to the closet, she wrapped her arms around her wife, whispering a soft, "Good morning, baby."
But Jenna wiggled out of her embrace and muttered, "Good morning my ass."
Natasha froze. She wasn't afraid of much in this world, but when Jenna was angry, really angry, she was terrified. Without another word, Natasha slowly backed toward the door, cautiously saying, "I see it's not a good time..."
The whole morning passed in tension. Natasha made breakfast and attempted to recall what she might've done wrong. As far as she could remember, everything had been great yesterday—they'd cuddled on the couch binge-watching Suits... among other activities.
Natasha had done the dishes, and she'd even picked up the kids from school. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
But today was different. Their usual morning routine was replaced by Jenna stilling wanting to cuddle, but only facing away from Natasha, (as if that would somehow prove a point) By noon, Natasha had had enough of the passive aggression and decided to corner her wife in the kitchen. She found Jenna standing on her toes, struggling to grab a snack from the upper cabinet.
"Need help with that?" Natasha asked.
Jenna muttered, "No, but imagine if you weren't here to help..."
Natasha paused, confused. "Huh?"
Jenna ignored her, stretching further for the snack, but Natasha reached over her head and grabbed the box in one quick motion.
Jenna grumbled, "Thanks. Feel like jumping for anything else?"
That's when it hit Natasha—October 16th. The day that always left a bitter taste in Jenna's mouth. Natasha bit her lip, trying to hide the smile creeping up on her face as the realization settled.
She watched as Jenna plopped herself down on the counter, eating a cereal bar she'd stolen from Atlas's stash. Jenna's annoyed gaze shot up at Natasha, who was still smiling.
"What are you smiling at?" Jenna asked, clearly irritated.
Natasha shrugged, the hint of a grin still on her lips. "Nothing."
Natasha moved toward Jenna, her heart softening at the sight of her wife sitting on the counter, frustration written all over her face. Without a word, she stood between Jenna's legs, not daring to break the moment.
Jenna didn't try to push her away this time. Natasha gently cupped Jenna's face with both hands, even as Jenna stubbornly kept the cereal bar in her mouth."I'm sorry" Natasha whispered, her thumbs brushing over Jenna's cheeks.
Jenna's expression softened, but her voice was still laced with that same bitterness she felt every year. "Mhmm"
Jenna can still recall the moment; how it terrified her to think that Natasha could've been gone—by choice.
"I'm not going anywhere" Natasha added quietly, her hands still holding Jenna's face. "Not then, not now, not ever." Natasha's eyes softened as she held Jenna's face, her thumbs tracing gentle circles on her skin. She watched as Jenna chewed silently on the cereal bar. The anger that had once blazed in Jenna's eyes had dulled.
But she chose to stay... Well Jenna made her choose to stay, but let's not get into that right now. She was still upset.
Natasha leaned in just a little, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're stuck with me forever, you know that, right?"
Jenna's eyes flicked up to meet hers, and for a moment, Natasha saw the ghost of a smile pulling at the corners of her wife's mouth.
"Forever's a long time" Jenna muttered, still trying to cling to her frustration, though it was clearly slipping.
"I know" Natasha replied, her tone warm and teasing, a soft smile tugging at her lips now too.
Natasha's gaze softened even more as she watched Jenna bite her bottom lip, trying to suppress a smile. It was adorable, and Natasha couldn't resist. She reached over and gently pulled Jenna's lip free with her thumb, causing Jenna to finally let out a breathy laugh.
"Sounds like you're trying to sweet talk me"
Jenna murmured, her voice teasing, but her walls were crumbling, and Natasha could see it."No" Natasha replied, her eyes twinkling. "I mean, yeah, maybe a little. But I'm also making you a promise." Natasha held up her pinkie, extending it toward Jenna.
Jenna couldn't fight it anymore--the smile
Natasha loved so much broke free, lighting up her face, and Natasha's heart swelled. That smile always made everything better, and seeing it now made Natasha want to drop dead and die... Maybe that was a bad choice of words, but still.
Jenna glanced at Natasha's pinkie, shaking her head softly but grinning all the same as she reached up and intertwined her own pinkie with Natasha's.
Natasha voice gentle but resolute promised.
"More than just forever."An: Imagine if today was the day Natasha died. Luckily Jenna was there 🙂 She will never get over it. She is petty. They could be 60 and Jenna would be like remember that time.
My laptop felt silly goofy today and decided to die and I might cry because a few chapters are on it
