AAAAAAAHHH! GET AWAY FROM ME!
Your wings spread out, dark, black, haunting things. You stood frozen in fear, your mother screaming bloody murder as she witnessed your quirk unfurling for the first time. You were eight. Older than most when they received their quirks, and in that moment, you wished yours never came at all.
Your mother's fear mostly dissipated, turning into annoyance. "God! I can't do this with you! There is always something going on with you! Now this?"
You couldn't muster out any words. You were still in shock from the dark appendages that grew from your back. They were heavy. Not only because of their size, but because you did not have the courage to lift them after your mother's breakdown.
"I'm calling your father. He can deal with this. I'm done." Your mother muttered as she stormed out of the kitchen where you both were standing.
"You need to get home immediately. Y/N just got her quirk. It's disgusting." You could hear your mom on the phone with your dad, utter disgust lacing her voice. "Yeah. Black demon wings. Just get home. I don't want to deal with this anymore."
You walked into the bathroom next to your kitchen. Your house was not large by any means, but it was not small either. You thought it was perfect. As you turned the corner to walk into the bathroom, you took a deep breath to prepare yourself for what you were about to see in your reflection. You turned the handle and stopped. Your eyes were wide. Was it with fear or awe? You didn't know yet. You lifted your wings, allowing them to almost entirely unfurl to see all their "glory". You let out a small gasp as you opened them. You couldn't believe you had finally received a quirk. But you weren't sure if you were allowed to like it. You stepped fully into the bathroom and closed the door behind you. You expanded your wings fully, watching the wispy shadows as they curled around the tips of your feathers.
"They're disgusting!" Your mother shouted from the front entrance of your home.
"Would you relax? She is a child! She did not decide her quirk!" Your father shot back.
You paid no mind to them as you experimented with your quirk some more. You touched them, and even though they looked like they were almost entirely made out of darkness, they were still solid. You flexed them, getting used to the new feeling on your back. You moved them around, rolling and unrolling your feathers. Suddenly, a long, dark, almost translucent shadow shot forward, knocking the bottle of hand soap on your counter, over. Your eyes widened. You moved the shadow again, gentler this time. It poked at the bottle, rolling it around the bathroom counter. You spent countless moments trying to coil it around the bottle and place it next to the sink faucet, all while your parents were still arguing in the foyer. You stuck out your tongue, focusing as hard as you could, slowly moving the tendril around the nozzle of the bottle. Once you successfully wrapped your shadow around the soap, you slowly and carefully lifted it back up. But before you had a second to place it back down, the bathroom door slammed open, causing you to jump and drop the bottle.
"What on Earth are you doing?!" Your mother screeched.
"I-I was just practicing with my quirk..." You mumbled softly.
"Hana!" Your dad shouted, "let me talk to her for Christ's sake!"
"Ugh! Fine! Gang up on me like you always do!" Your mother scoffed, turning away from the bathroom door, but not before she shot you a glare.
"Hey, honey." Your dad whispered. "Are you okay?"
You looked down at the floor, unsure what you were feeling in that moment. You had just achieved your dream of getting a quirk, but your mother was degrading you for it. Your father gently pulled you into a hug, careful to avoid your wings. Your dad always knew how to make you feel better.
"Now turn around, I want to see this awesome quirk of yours." Your dad smiled. You loved your dad more than anything. He was always supportive. Always gentle. Always kind.
As you turned around, you looked at your reflection in the bathroom mirror. "These are so cool, honey! They're like shadows!" Your dad exclaimed. You could see the tips of your wings peeking up from where you were standing, and you smiled. Your dad liked them. And that's all that mattered to you.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
You heard a loud bang come from your front door. You were in your living room. Your wings tucked away as it was just you and your mother at home, your dad at work.
"Who could that be?" Your mother questioned out loud. You peeked over the couch, where you were sitting, to see who was at the front door. It was an officer.
"Good evening ma'am." The policeman said solemnly as he lowered his cap.
"What is this about?" Your mom asked.
The officer held his hat close to his chest, his head slightly bowed. "I regret to inform you... but... um... your husband, Ren Tanaka, was killed in a car crash this evening..." His eyes averted the wide ones of your mother.
"Wh-what?!" She exclaimed. "No, no, you're lying! You have to be lying!"
You sat on your couch. You couldn't move. Your whole world was crashing down on you. Tears dripped down your cheeks as it sank in. Your father, the man that had been by your side your entire life, your best friend, your biggest supporter, was gone. The sounds of your mother crying were muffled as you could not comprehend what was happening. Memories flashed through your head like film as you thought about your dad. It couldn't be real. It wasn't real. Was it? You couldn't tell. Your heart was racing and your sobs were increasing. You let your wings unfurl. You did not care if your mother screamed at you. You wrapped yourself in your wings as you fell to the side of your couch, your tears turning to small waterfalls as you poured out your heart, wrapped in the last thing you had that reminded you of the kindness of your father.
