As Kane returned to his cell there were still a few hours before lights out. His cell mate was sitting on the stool this time, snaking on an oat bar.
'Hey, my names Kane by the way. Your new cell mate.' He divided to introduce himself.
The man looked at his for the first time 'Haru.' Was all Kane got as a reply before Haru turned his back to him, making it known he was not interested in conversation.
That night, the three officers had decided to carry on observing the groups for the next few days, see who's closest to king and try get themselves in his circle.
Half an hour after light went out Kane laid in the pitch black listening to the mellowed out sounds of other inmates and demands from wardens to shut up while quite literally contemplating his life. He thought deep and hard if he even had what it takes for this mission. If his decisions were the right ones.
He thought about plans mostly, wanting to get out the prison as fast as possible but he knew he couldn't rush this.
If he got caught in here, by king or someone else, would he die?.
Would they be able to pull him out in time?
Would the drug trafficking bust and all the months of hard work useless?
All this kept him awake till the noise of the prison silenced and almost an hour had gone by. His eyes eventually grew heavy enough, he was teetering on the edge of consciousness when he heard a gasp.
He thought he was dreaming. But then he heard the grunts and heavy breaths. The bedsheets below him shuffled around and he leaned over his bunk to see Haru thrashing around below, choking and gasping for air.
Kane jumped down from his bunk 'Hey, you need to wake up' he harshly whispered. Nudging gently at the men, then gradually harder as his breathing became shorter, his face pale and body still thrashing. 'Ok Haru you need to wake the fuck up!' He whispered with more harsh urgency, but he didn't want to alert the guards.
He kept trying desperately to wake up Haru. Until he realised Luke had stopped breathing. He was forcibly holding his breath. 'Fucking shit!!' He grabbed Haru's shoulders and shook him awake. As the man's eyes fly open and his mouth gasps air desperately Kane realised he still very much in a panic.
In an attempt to calm him down fast, still weary of guards coming by, Kane embraced the man tight on his bed. He traps his arms against his body and uses his legs to try hold down Haru's legs. Trying to hold together the trembling man in his arms.
'Breathe alright' he murmured softly this time. 'Your fine, ok I got you just breath'
It took a few long minutes till Haru's trembling dies down to occasional tremors, and he breathing mostly evens out only hitching every so often.
Kane didn't talk or ask about what happened, but he doesn't loosen his grip on Haru either. They sat in relative silence for a long while, at some point Haru's muscles relaxed and his head fell limp agains Kanes shoulder.
When it seemed Haru had fallen back asleep, Kane ever so slightly shifted to adapt his now aching arched back. But the second he did he regretted not just firming it for the night. Haru shot up. Muscles tensed and in a flash he had scrambled to the farthest side of the bed he could get. His hand slapped over his mouth to muffle his short yelp.
Kane was to shocked for a second to react before his hands flew up in surrender. 'I ain't hurtin you. Swear.' He tried.
Haru stared wearily for his curled up position and said nothing until Kane got the message he was no longer welcome in this mans personal space. He wasn't offended his kindness and sacrificed back went with out thanks, he understood to a degree.
He was a stranger to Haru. And in the state Haru was in it was highly likely he did't understand much of what was going on. So with a short goodnight, and the first smile Kane had let on his lips since getting the mission, he climbed back to his own bed and listened attentively for another nightmarish episode from the man below till he fell asleep himself.
