Introduction:

The chapter opens with a flashback. It’s a rainy evening, and 8-year-old Kai Nakamura sits in a sterile hospital room. Machines beep in the background, doctors and nurses speak in hushed tones, and the smell of antiseptic fills the air. Kai is small and frail, his skin pale under the harsh hospital lights. He’s holding his mother’s hand tightly, her face tense with worry.

Kai’s mother listens as the doctor explains his condition:

Doctor:
"Your son has a rare congenital heart defect. It’s treatable, but... there’s no guarantee. We’ll need to monitor him closely throughout his life."

Young Kai doesn’t fully understand what the doctor is saying, but he can see the fear in his mother’s eyes. The weight of his condition doesn’t hit him yet, but he senses that something is very wrong.

Kai (internal monologue):
“That was the first time I saw my mother cry.”

The rain outside becomes heavier, mirroring the heaviness that settles in the room.

As the years pass, Kai’s life becomes defined by hospital visits, medications, and limitations. He watches other kids play outside while he sits in the shade, his hand clutching his chest. His childhood is filled with loneliness, with a constant sense of being different, fragile.

Young Kai (internal monologue):
“Why can’t I run like them? Why am I the only one who has to be so careful?”

At school, he becomes isolated. His classmates treat him with caution, always afraid that they might hurt him if they play too rough. Kai feels like he’s trapped in a glass box, separated from the world by an invisible wall.

Page 7-9: His Father’s Absence

The flashback shifts to a scene of Kai’s family at home. It’s a quiet night, and the house feels emptier than usual. Kai’s father, a once loving and supportive presence, has grown distant since Kai’s diagnosis. He spends more and more time at work, avoiding the situation at home.

One evening, Kai overhears an argument between his parents. They think he’s asleep, but he listens through the thin walls.

Father:
"I can’t take this anymore. Every day, it’s hospitals, bills, and... I’m scared too, but I can’t just pretend that everything’s okay."
Mother (voice trembling):
"He's our son! How can you say that? We need to be strong for him!"

Kai hears the door slam as his father leaves. That was the last time Kai saw him. After that night, his father left for good.

Kai (internal monologue):
“After that, it was just me and Mom. She tried so hard to keep everything together... but I knew.”

His mother works two jobs to cover the medical expenses and takes on the emotional weight of caring for him. Kai remembers the nights she would fall asleep at his bedside, exhausted but refusing to leave him alone. She hides her exhaustion behind a smile, but Kai can see the toll it’s taking on her.

Mother (softly):
"It’s okay, Kai. Everything will be fine."
Kai (internal monologue):
“But I knew it wasn’t. I could see her breaking, piece by piece.”

Kai feels an overwhelming guilt. He knows his condition is why his father left, why his mother is so tired, why their lives are so difficult. He starts to retreat into himself, believing that his existence is a burden on those around him.

Page 13-15: The Darkest Moment

The flashback turns darker. One night, around the age of 14, Kai has a particularly bad episode. His heart feels like it’s being squeezed, and he collapses in his room. His mother rushes him to the hospital, her face pale with fear.

In the hospital bed, as he recovers, Kai lies awake, staring at the ceiling. His thoughts turn darker, consumed by guilt and despair. For the first time, he wonders if it would be easier if he weren’t around. If his mother could have a normal life. If he weren’t a burden.

Kai (internal monologue):
“Maybe... it would be better if I didn’t wake up.”

This moment is a turning point in Kai’s life. From this point on, he stops thinking about the future altogether. He shuts down emotionally, living each day as it comes, just trying to survive without letting anyone get too close.

The next day, as Kai lies in bed, his mother sits beside him, holding his hand. She can sense his despair, even though he doesn’t say anything. Her voice is soft, but there’s a deep strength in it.

Mother:
"Kai, I know things are hard. But no matter what, you’re the most important thing in my life. I would do anything for you. You’re not a burden. You never were."

Kai doesn’t respond, but his heart aches at her words. He wants to believe her, but the weight of his condition feels too heavy to bear.

Page 19: Flashback Ends - Present Day

The chapter ends with Kai waking up from the flashback, lying in bed after the day he spent with Miyu. His heart monitor beeps steadily in the background, a reminder of the life he’s been living under the shadow of his condition. His mother’s words echo in his mind.

Kai (internal monologue):
“I never let myself dream again after that night... but somehow, today felt different. Meeting Miyu... it made me feel like maybe, just maybe, I don’t have to carry this weight alone anymore.”

The final page shows Kai sitting up, looking out his window at the night sky, the first hint of hope in his eyes.

Chapter End

In this chapter, we explore the deeper, darker aspects of Kai’s past—his struggles with his heart condition, his father’s abandonment, his mother’s sacrifice, and his internal battle with guilt and despair. These experiences shaped Kai into someone who believes he doesn’t deserve to dream or hope for the future. However, Miyu’s appearance in his life is slowly starting to change that, as we’ll see in future chapters.
