Introduction:

The chapter begins with an overhead shot of Kai Nakamura walking down the hallway of his high school, blending into the background. His head is slightly lowered, his body language withdrawn, and his expression blank. Other students pass by, chatting and laughing, oblivious to him. Despite trying to stay invisible, there’s an underlying tension in the air that surrounds him.

Page 1-3: Social Isolation

Kai is in class, sitting in his usual spot near the window. He watches his classmates talk and laugh, but he never joins in. Kai has learned to avoid attention, afraid of getting too close to anyone. Most students treat him like he’s fragile, avoiding him out of discomfort, while others are indifferent or subtly cruel.

Kai (internal monologue):
“It’s always been this way. People either ignore me or keep their distance. I’ve never fit in. It’s easier to stay alone.”

The teacher begins the lesson, and Kai takes notes in silence. In the background, we hear the whispers of a few classmates, directed at him.

Classmate 1 (whispering):
"Did you hear about him? I heard he’s got some kind of heart problem."
Classmate 2:
"Yeah, that’s why he never does anything in gym class. My mom said his family’s always in the hospital."
Classmate 3:
"Must suck, huh? Can’t even run without passing out."

Kai hears every word but pretends not to. He’s used to the rumors, the whispers, and the isolation. But every time he hears them, a small part of him sinks deeper into himself.

Page 4-6: The Bullies

After class, Kai heads to his locker, trying to stay unnoticed. As he reaches for his textbooks, a group of students, led by Yuto, a notorious bully, approach him. Yuto is taller, louder, and constantly searching for someone weaker to pick on. Today, his target is Kai.

Yuto (mocking):
"Hey, Nakamura, you’re always so quiet. What’s up with that? You think you’re too good to talk to the rest of us?"

Kai avoids eye contact, trying to brush past Yuto, but the bully steps in front of him, blocking his way. The group of students around Yuto snickers.

Kai (internal monologue):
“Just stay quiet. Don’t let them get to you. It’ll be over soon.”

But Yuto isn’t finished. He grabs Kai’s backpack and yanks it away, causing the contents to spill across the floor—books, papers, and his heart medication bottle roll out. The sight of the medication catches Yuto’s eye, and his smirk grows wider.

Yuto (grinning):
"Oh, what’s this? You sick or something? Got some kind of disease?"

Kai’s heart races, panic setting in as he sees the bottle in Yuto’s hand. His hands shake slightly as he bends down to pick up his things, but Yuto isn’t done.

Page 7-9: Heart Device Revealed

Yuto leans in closer, noticing the faint outline of something under Kai’s shirt. Without warning, he grabs the collar of Kai’s shirt and yanks it down, exposing the small, square device attached to Kai’s chest—his heart monitor and defibrillator.

The crowd around them gasps, and a tense silence falls over the hallway. Kai freezes, his worst fear realized: his secret is out.

Yuto (shocked):
"What the hell is that? You’re like a robot or something!"

Laughter erupts from the students gathered around, and Kai’s face flushes with humiliation. He pulls his shirt back up quickly, but the damage is done. His heart pounds in his chest, both from panic and the exertion of the situation. The device, meant to save his life, now feels like a mark of shame.

Kai (internal monologue):
“I can’t believe this... not here... not like this.”

Yuto and his gang laugh, but Kai can barely hear them over the sound of his heart pounding in his ears. His body is trembling, and he feels the first signs of a heart episode coming on—shortness of breath, dizziness.

Page 10-12: The Collapse

Suddenly, Kai’s vision blurs, and his legs give out. He collapses to the floor, gasping for air. The students around him fall silent, watching in shock as Kai struggles to breathe.

Yuto (nervously):
"Hey, what’s... what’s wrong with him?"

Panic sets in for the bullies as they realize the severity of the situation. Yuto steps back, his bravado gone, replaced by fear. Kai’s body twitches slightly as the device kicks in, stabilizing his heart rhythm.

From the crowd, Miyu Aoyama rushes forward. She pushes through the group, kneeling beside Kai. Her face is pale with worry, but she acts quickly, turning him onto his side and speaking softly.

Miyu:
"Kai, just breathe. You’ll be okay. I’m here."

Kai struggles to stay conscious, but Miyu’s presence grounds him. Her voice cuts through the panic, and slowly, his breathing steadies.

Page 13-15: Aftermath

A few minutes later, the school nurse arrives, and Kai is taken to the nurse’s office. The bullies have scattered, too afraid of the consequences of what just happened. Miyu stays with him the whole time, her hand resting on his arm, comforting him in silence.

In the nurse’s office, Kai sits on the bed, staring at the floor, overwhelmed with humiliation and exhaustion. He can still feel the weight of everyone’s stares, their laughter ringing in his ears. Miyu sits beside him, quiet for a moment, before she finally speaks.

Miyu (softly):
"You don’t have to hide it, you know. People can be cruel... but you don’t have to carry this burden alone."

Kai looks at her, his expression a mixture of anger, shame, and sadness.

Kai (quietly):
"You don’t understand. They’ll never stop. I can’t escape this."

Miyu’s eyes soften, and she reaches out, gently placing her hand on his.

Miyu:
"I’m not saying it’s easy. But... I’m here. You don’t have to go through this alone."

Kai doesn’t respond right away, but her words slowly start to sink in. For the first time in a long while, he feels like someone actually sees him—not as fragile, not as a burden, but as a person.

Page 16-18: New Resolve

As the day comes to an end, Kai walks home with Miyu. The weight of what happened still hangs over him, but her presence brings him a small sense of relief. He’s embarrassed, humiliated, and angry, but he’s also starting to realize that maybe he doesn’t have to face it all by himself.

Kai (internal monologue):
“I’ve spent so long trying to hide, trying to survive without letting anyone in... but maybe, just maybe, I don’t have to do this alone anymore.”

The chapter ends with Kai standing at his front door, watching Miyu walk away. He clutches his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart—reminded both of its fragility and the strength he might need to find within himself.

Kai (internal monologue):
“Maybe... I can let someone in.”
