Introduction:

In Chapter 13, Kai faces one of the most painful moments of his life—the funeral of his mother.

Page 1-3: The Funeral Begins

The chapter opens on a gray, overcast day. A small crowd has gathered at the cemetery, the atmosphere heavy with sorrow. The scene is quiet except for the low murmur of voices. Kai stands by his mother’s casket, wearing a black suit that feels too tight and suffocating. His face is pale, and his eyes are distant, the weight of the moment pressing down on him.

Around him, some of his classmates from school have gathered out of respect, standing in small groups, whispering quietly to each other. They don’t know Kai well, but the tragedy of losing a parent has moved them to attend.

Kai (internal monologue, numb):
“Is this really happening? Is she really gone?”

He can’t fully process the reality of the moment. It all feels surreal, like a nightmare he can’t wake up from.

Page 4-6: The Appearance of His Father

As the ceremony begins, Kai feels a presence behind him. He turns slowly to see a man approaching—his father, who he hasn’t seen in years. His father is dressed in a formal suit, his expression somber. There’s a tension in the air, a history of unresolved pain and distance between them.

Father (quietly):
"Kai... I’m sorry. I came as soon as I heard."

Kai’s hands clench at his sides, a mixture of emotions bubbling beneath the surface—anger, confusion, resentment. He hasn’t seen his father in so long, and now he’s suddenly here, when his mother is gone.

Kai (bitterly, internal monologue):
“He shows up now? After all this time... where was he when we needed him?”

His father steps closer, his voice low but filled with regret.

Father (gently):
"I know I haven’t been there for you, and I won’t ask for forgiveness. But I’m here now, Kai. I’ll help you through this."

Kai doesn’t respond. He can’t bring himself to look at his father, the pain too raw. Instead, he turns back toward the casket, his mind spinning with grief.

Page 7-9: Classmates’ Presence

Kai’s classmates stand nearby, watching the interaction between Kai and his father from a respectful distance. They don’t say much, but their presence speaks to the weight of the moment.

Classmate 1 (whispering):
"That’s his dad, right? I heard they haven’t spoken in years..."

Classmate 2 (quietly):
"Yeah... this must be so hard for him."

Despite their hushed conversations, they remain quiet out of respect, sensing the gravity of the situation. They don’t know Kai well, but they can see the immense pain he’s in.

Page 10-12: Flashbacks of His Mother

As the priest begins to speak, Kai’s mind drifts. He’s not listening to the words; instead, he’s lost in memories of his mother. Short, fragmented flashbacks flicker through his mind like an old film reel:

His mother laughing as they made dinner together, the kitchen filled with warmth.

Her voice softly singing him to sleep when he was a child.

The feel of her hand on his forehead when he was sick, her gentle care easing his pain.

Each memory strikes him like a dagger to the heart, and his chest tightens with overwhelming grief.

Kai (internal monologue, broken):
“She was all I had... and now she’s gone.”

His body trembles slightly as the weight of his emotions threatens to crush him.

Page 13-15: Miyu’s Support

Just when it feels like the grief will swallow him whole, Miyu appears at his side. She’s been quietly standing nearby the entire time, watching Kai with concern. She can see how much pain he’s in—how close he is to breaking.

Without saying a word, she gently places her hand on his shoulder, her touch light but steady. It’s a simple gesture, but in that moment, it feels like a lifeline to Kai.

Miyu (internal monologue, resolute):
“I won’t let him go through this alone. He needs someone... and I’ll be that person.”

Kai doesn’t look at her, but he feels her presence, and somehow, it makes the crushing weight of his grief just a little bit lighter.

The funeral service concludes, and people begin to disperse, offering quiet condolences as they pass by Kai. His classmates nod respectfully, but they keep their distance, unsure of what to say. Haruka, who has also been present, stands with them, her expression solemn.

Kai’s father approaches him once more before leaving.

Father (softly):
"I’ll be in touch, Kai. I’ll help however I can."

Kai remains silent, still too overwhelmed to process anything. His father gives him a final, sorrowful look before turning and walking away, disappearing into the small crowd.

Page 19-20: Kai’s Inner Turmoil

As the cemetery empties, Kai is left standing in front of his mother’s grave, the freshly turned earth stark against the gray sky. He feels utterly lost, his mind swirling with thoughts of his mother, his father, and the uncertainty of his future.

Kai (internal monologue, despairing):
“What am I supposed to do now? She’s gone... I’m alone...”

Miyu, still standing by his side, squeezes his shoulder gently. Her voice is soft but filled with quiet strength.

Miyu (softly):
"You’re not alone, Kai. I’ll be here for you. Always."

Her words cut through the haze of his grief, and though he doesn’t respond, something in him shifts. For the first time since his mother’s death, he feels a small flicker of hope. It’s faint, buried deep beneath the pain, but it’s there.

Chapter End

In Chapter 13, the emotional weight of Kai’s grief reaches its peak as he confronts the reality of his mother’s death at her funeral. The unexpected appearance of his father adds another layer of complexity, as Kai grapples with unresolved feelings of abandonment. The flashbacks to his time with his mother deepen the sorrow, showing how much she meant to him. Yet, through it all, Miyu’s quiet support becomes a crucial emotional anchor for Kai, reminding him that he’s not entirely alone in his suffering. This chapter serves as a turning point for Kai, as he begins to rely more on Miyu’s strength, even if he’s not fully ready to open up yet.
