Introduction:

Chapter 10 focuses on the aftermath of Kai’s mother’s death. Authorities arrive, and Kai is left to process the shock and trauma.

Page 1-3: The Arrival of Authorities

The scene opens with Kai sitting on the floor in his mother’s bedroom, completely numb and lost in his grief. The room is dark, illuminated only by the flashing red and blue lights outside the house as the police and paramedics arrive. Officers are speaking quietly in the background, but their voices feel distant and muffled to Kai, as if they’re underwater.

Officer 1 (softly):
"It’s confirmed. Cause of death appears to be suicide."

Paramedic (gently):
"We need to take her now. Do we have the son’s contact details for next of kin?"

Kai remains frozen, barely registering what’s happening around him. His mind is stuck in a loop, replaying the moment he found his mother over and over again, the note burning into his memory.

Kai (internal monologue, fragmented):
“Gone. She’s gone... How could she... She left me... I didn’t even...”

A police officer kneels down next to Kai, speaking gently, but his words don’t quite reach him.

Officer 2 (kindly):
"Son, do you have someone we can call for you? A family member? A friend?"

Kai doesn’t respond. He just stares blankly ahead, his eyes unfocused, tears staining his face.

Page 4-6: Locked in Grief

The authorities eventually leave, having removed his mother’s body and completed their initial investigation. Kai is left alone in the now-empty house, which feels colder and emptier than ever before.

Kai (internal monologue):
“She’s really gone. I’m... alone.”

Kai moves mechanically, walking to his room and closing the door behind him. He sits on the edge of his bed, his whole body trembling as the full weight of his grief hits him. The silence in the house feels suffocating, pressing down on him until he can hardly breathe.

Without thinking, Kai locks the door and collapses onto the bed, curling into himself as the tears start flowing again. He clutches his pillow, sobbing uncontrollably, the pain too overwhelming to bear.

Kai (internal monologue, breaking):
“Why did she leave me? Why didn’t I see it? I didn’t even... I didn’t get to say goodbye...”

He punches the mattress, his grief morphing into anger and helplessness. He wants to scream, to lash out at the world, but all he can do is cry. His heart pounds erratically, the familiar pain in his chest reminding him of his own fragility.

Kai (internal monologue):
“I don’t want to be here anymore... I can’t do this... I can’t...”

Page 7-9: Miyu and Haruka’s Concern

Meanwhile, Miyu and Haruka are at school, sitting together during lunch. They’ve noticed that Kai hasn’t been to school for several days, and both of them are growing increasingly worried.

Haruka (frowning):
"Where’s Kai been? It’s been days... Do you think something happened?"

Miyu (concerned):
"I don’t know... He didn’t say anything about being sick or anything when we last saw him."

Miyu can’t shake the uneasy feeling she’s had ever since their hangout ended. She remembers how quiet Kai had been during the last part of their day together, and how there was something in his eyes that unsettled her.

Miyu (internal monologue):
“He wasn’t okay... I should have asked more... I should have done something.”

Haruka (serious):
"Maybe we should go check on him after school. Just to make sure everything’s alright."

Miyu nods, her worry deepening. She knows that Kai tends to keep things to himself, but this feels different. There’s a heaviness in the air, and it’s making her anxious.

Page 10-12: Kai’s Isolation

Back in his room, Kai remains locked in his grief. Days pass, and he doesn’t leave the room. The sunlight filters weakly through the blinds, but it does nothing to lift the oppressive darkness in his heart.

Food remains untouched by his bedside. His phone sits silent, ignored, with missed calls and messages from classmates and teachers. But Kai can’t bring himself to care about any of it. He’s trapped in a world of his own pain, spiraling deeper into despair.

Kai (internal monologue, hollow):
“What’s the point? Everything... everything I cared about is gone. She’s gone. I’m going to die anyway... so why does it matter?”

He buries his face in his hands, shaking uncontrollably as another wave of sobs overtakes him. His thoughts become darker, the suffocating grief mixing with the fear of his own mortality. The weight of his heart condition feels heavier than ever, like a ticking clock counting down to his end.

Page 13-15: Growing Desperation

Days blur together for Kai, and his mind begins to fracture under the strain. He’s haunted by memories of his mother, of the moments they shared and the things they never got to say. Her voice echoes in his head, mixing with his own guilt and self-blame.

Kai (internal monologue, breaking):
“I could have stopped it. I could have saved her... if I’d just... noticed... But I was too focused on myself. I was so selfish...”

He feels like he’s drowning, sinking deeper into a pit of darkness that he can’t escape from. The isolation, the silence, the grief—it’s all too much for him to handle.

Kai (internal monologue, despairing):
“Maybe... maybe it would be better if I wasn’t here anymore. Maybe then... I wouldn’t have to feel this pain...”

Just as Kai’s thoughts begin to spiral toward their darkest point, there’s a knock at his bedroom door. He ignores it at first, but the knocking persists.

Miyu (from outside the door, worried):
"Kai? Are you in there? Please, say something..."

Kai freezes, his breath catching in his throat. He wasn’t expecting anyone to come. The sound of Miyu’s voice, so gentle and concerned, cuts through the fog of his grief for just a moment.

Miyu (softly, pleading):
"I’m really worried about you... Please, let me in."

Kai hesitates, his emotions warring inside him. He doesn’t want to see anyone, doesn’t want to burden them with his pain. But at the same time, there’s a small, fragile part of him that doesn’t want to be alone anymore.

After a long pause, he slowly reaches out and unlocks the door.
