Hearts Entwined in a Fractured World
Part 5: The Temptation of Pandora
As the days passed, Subaru found himself grappling with the deepening bonds he had formed with Beatrice, Petra, Meili, and Ryuzu. Each of them had offered him pieces of their hearts, and Subaru could feel himself slowly being drawn into their worlds. But no matter how many answers he found, there was always something lingering in the back of his mind—an unshakable feeling of something unresolved, something darker, watching him from afar.
That darkness finally took shape in the form of Pandora, the Witch of Vainglory.
Pandora had been a distant figure in Subaru’s life, always lurking on the edges of his journey, a haunting presence that made itself known in fleeting glimpses. But there had always been something strangely alluring about her—a dangerous beauty that called to him despite the looming threat she represented.
One night, when the mansion was shrouded in quiet stillness, Subaru found himself drawn to the forest at the edges of the estate. The air was heavy with an unnatural calm, and the light of the full moon cast long, ominous shadows between the trees. As he walked deeper into the woods, a familiar sense of dread began to settle over him, and Subaru knew—she was waiting.
And there, in the clearing bathed in silver moonlight, stood Pandora.
"Subaru," Pandora’s voice was soft, almost melodic, as if she were beckoning him closer. Her ethereal form seemed to shimmer in the moonlight, her pale hair flowing like silk, and her eyes—a deep, piercing blue—gazed at him with an intensity that sent shivers down his spine.
Subaru swallowed hard, his body instinctively tensing. "Pandora," he said, his voice low but steady. "Why are you here?"
Pandora smiled, a smile that was both kind and terrifying. "Is that any way to greet me? After all, it’s been so long since we last spoke." She stepped closer, her movements graceful, almost floating as she approached. "I’ve been watching you, Subaru. Watching how you struggle, how you bear the weight of others’ hearts. It’s admirable… but unnecessary."
Subaru frowned, his heart pounding in his chest as she came closer. "Unnecessary? What are you talking about?"
Pandora tilted her head slightly, her eyes narrowing as if she found his confusion amusing. "You’ve entangled yourself in so many lives, taken on their pain, their love, their desires. But what about you, Subaru? What do you desire?"
Subaru stiffened at her words, feeling the weight of her gaze pressing down on him. He had always been the one to put others first, to protect and save those he cared about. But Pandora’s words made him question—what did he want? What did he truly desire?
"I don’t need anything from you," Subaru said firmly, trying to ignore the strange pull he felt toward her. "I don’t trust you, Pandora."
Pandora’s smile remained, though it softened ever so slightly. "Trust is such a fragile thing, isn’t it? But I’m not here to harm you, Subaru. I’m here because I see something in you—a strength that no one else can offer."
She reached out then, her slender fingers brushing against his cheek, and Subaru felt a sudden chill run through him. It wasn’t fear, but something deeper, something primal. He should have pulled away, but instead, he found himself rooted in place, unable to move, unable to look away from her hypnotic gaze.
"You’ve been burdened by choices that no one should have to make," Pandora continued, her voice soothing yet filled with a strange allure. "And yet, you’ve made them, again and again. But don’t you ever wonder what it would be like… to live without that weight? To live only for yourself?"
Her words wrapped around him like a spell, and Subaru could feel the temptation creeping into his mind. For a fleeting moment, he imagined it—living without the responsibility, without the constant fear of losing those he loved. He could see a world where he was free, where his heart wasn’t torn between so many others.
But as quickly as the thought came, Subaru banished it, clenching his fists. "No. That’s not who I am."
Pandora’s expression darkened slightly, her eyes narrowing. "Are you so sure?" she asked, her voice a whisper now, dangerous and cold. "You say you wish to protect those around you, but you can’t protect everyone, Subaru. Not without me."
Subaru’s breath hitched, the weight of her words sinking into him like a poison. He knew she was dangerous, knew she was trying to manipulate him, but there was a truth in her words that he couldn’t deny. He had failed before. He had died countless times, watched people he loved suffer, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t save them all.
"What are you offering?" Subaru asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Pandora’s smile returned, this time sharper, more predatory. "I can give you the power to shape the world as you see fit. To end the suffering of those you love. I can grant you the strength to protect them… and the freedom to take what you desire most."
She moved closer, her breath warm against his skin as she whispered in his ear. "All you have to do… is trust me."
Subaru’s heart raced as her words echoed in his mind. The temptation was real—he could feel it pulling at him, promising him everything he had ever wanted. But there was something darker beneath the surface, something that told him that trusting Pandora would come at a price far greater than he was willing to pay.
Slowly, Subaru pulled away from her, his resolve hardening. "No," he said firmly, his voice filled with determination. "I won’t take shortcuts. I’ll protect them my own way."
Pandora’s expression flickered with a brief flash of disappointment before she sighed, her smile returning. "Such a shame," she murmured. "You could have had everything. But very well, Subaru. If that’s the path you choose, I won’t stop you. For now."
With that, she stepped back, her form beginning to fade into the shadows of the forest. But before she disappeared completely, she cast one last glance at him, her eyes gleaming with a promise. "Remember, Subaru… I will always be watching. And one day, you may find yourself coming back to me."
And with that, she was gone, leaving Subaru alone in the clearing, his heart still pounding in his chest.
Subaru stood there for a long time, staring at the spot where Pandora had vanished, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. He had resisted her temptation, but her words lingered, haunting him. Deep down, he knew that this wasn’t the last time she would test him.
But for now, Subaru’s resolve was clear. He would protect those he loved, no matter how hard the road ahead might be. And no matter what Pandora promised, he would never give in to the darkness she offered.
