Hearts Entwined in a Fractured World

Part 6: The Heart That Yearns

Subaru’s confrontation with Pandora lingered in his mind like a shadow that wouldn’t fade. Her words had cut deep, offering him the temptation to ease his burdens, yet Subaru had resisted. But the cost of that resistance was clear—he could not escape the weight of his relationships or the pain of the choices he would have to make. Despite Pandora’s departure, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she was always nearby, watching, waiting.

A few days passed since the encounter, and life at the mansion seemed to return to a tentative normalcy. Subaru tried to focus on his duties, spending time with the people who had become so precious to him—Beatrice, Petra, Meili, Ryuzu. But tonight, it was Beatrice whose presence tugged at his heart.

As night fell and the stars scattered like diamonds across the sky, Subaru found himself drawn to the library where Beatrice resided. The door to the Forbidden Archive creaked open as he entered, the soft glow of the candles casting flickering shadows across the rows of ancient tomes. And there, curled up in her favorite chair, was Beatrice.

She didn’t look up at first, but Subaru knew she had sensed him. Her small figure seemed even smaller in the vast room, but there was a quiet strength to her, a loneliness that had softened ever so slightly since he had promised to stay by her side.

"Betty," Subaru said softly, stepping further into the room. "I thought I’d find you here."

Beatrice’s pale blue eyes flicked up from her book, and though she tried to maintain her usual air of indifference, there was a warmth in her gaze that betrayed her true feelings. "You always find me, I suppose," she muttered, closing the book with a soft thud. "It’s… annoying, in fact."

Subaru smiled, pulling up a chair beside her. "Annoying? I’d think you’d be used to me by now."

Beatrice huffed, though her cheeks turned a faint shade of pink. "You’re persistent, I suppose. Always barging in whenever you feel like it."

"I can’t help it," Subaru replied, his voice gentle. "Being around you makes everything feel… lighter."

Beatrice looked away, trying to hide the emotion in her eyes. "You’re such a fool, I suppose," she muttered, but her voice wavered ever so slightly. "You say these things without thinking about the consequences."

Subaru’s heart tightened at her words. He had come to realize just how much Beatrice had suffered over the centuries, how lonely she had been, waiting for someone to fulfill the contract that bound her to the library. And now, with that contract broken, she was free—free to live, to love, and to make choices of her own. But that freedom came with its own pain, its own uncertainty.

"I think about the consequences more than you know, Beatrice," Subaru said softly, his gaze locking with hers. "And I meant what I said. I’ll always be here for you. No matter what."

Beatrice’s eyes widened at his words, and for a moment, she looked as though she might cry. But instead, she simply reached out, her small hand trembling as it found his. "You always say such things, I suppose," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "It’s unfair… how much I’ve come to rely on you."

Subaru’s heart ached as he held her hand, feeling the fragility of her emotions. "I’m glad you rely on me," he said gently. "Because I rely on you too. You’re important to me, Beatrice."

The weight of his words hung between them, and Beatrice looked at him with a mixture of vulnerability and longing that made Subaru’s chest tighten. He could see it in her eyes—the way she yearned for connection, for the love that she had been denied for so long. And he knew, in that moment, that his bond with Beatrice went beyond simple friendship. It was deeper, more profound, a connection forged through shared pain and understanding.

"Subaru…" Beatrice’s voice was soft, almost a plea. "Do you… truly mean it, I suppose? That you’ll stay with me? That you won’t… disappear?"

Subaru didn’t hesitate. He squeezed her hand gently, his eyes never leaving hers. "I swear it. I won’t leave you, Beatrice. Not now, not ever."

For a long moment, they simply sat there, the silence between them filled with unspoken emotions. Beatrice’s grip on his hand tightened, and she closed her eyes, as if allowing herself to believe in his promise. Her small frame trembled ever so slightly, and Subaru felt his heart swell with the need to protect her, to be the constant presence she had been denied for so long.

Without thinking, Subaru leaned closer, his free hand brushing a strand of her blonde hair away from her face. Beatrice’s eyes fluttered open, and in that moment, the distance between them seemed to vanish. He could feel her breath, soft and warm against his skin, and the vulnerability in her gaze made his heart ache.

Slowly, Subaru leaned in, pressing his lips to Beatrice’s in a soft, tender kiss.

Beatrice gasped softly against his lips, her eyes widening in surprise, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she melted into the kiss, her small hands clutching at his shirt as if afraid he might disappear. The kiss was gentle, filled with a quiet longing, a promise that Subaru would always be there for her, no matter what.

When they finally pulled apart, Beatrice’s cheeks were flushed, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears. She looked at him as though she couldn’t believe what had just happened, as though the weight of centuries of loneliness had been lifted in a single moment.

"You’re… such an idiot, I suppose," Beatrice whispered, her voice shaky. "But… thank you."

Subaru smiled, his heart full as he brushed his thumb against her cheek. "I’ll be your idiot if that’s what it takes."

Beatrice let out a soft, breathless laugh, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Subaru saw a glimmer of pure happiness in her eyes.

As the night wore on, they remained together in the quiet of the library, their hands intertwined, their hearts finally at peace. Subaru knew that there were still challenges ahead, still decisions to be made, but in that moment, nothing else mattered. He had made a promise to Beatrice, and he intended to keep it.
