Part 12: Shifting Dynamics and Hidden Tensions

The mansion felt unusually lively the morning after, though Subaru knew the real reason was anything but ordinary. Despite Otto’s promise to keep quiet, Subaru couldn’t shake the gnawing anxiety that someone else might have noticed the events of last night.

As the morning sunlight filtered through the grand windows of the mansion, Subaru decided to avoid the main halls and focus on staying out of trouble for the day. But fate, as always, had other plans.

---

Subaru was in the library, skimming through random books to calm his nerves when Beatrice walked in. She looked like her usual self, but there was a slight flush to her cheeks.

"Subaru, I suppose," Beatrice began, her voice softer than usual. She avoided his gaze, which immediately raised a red flag in Subaru’s mind.

"Morning, Beatrice," Subaru replied nervously, closing the book he was holding. "Uh… how are you feeling?"

Beatrice fidgeted with her dress, which was something Subaru rarely saw her do. "Last night was… unexpected, I suppose," she muttered. Then, looking up at him, she added, "But I don’t regret it, in fact."

Subaru’s face turned red as he tried to find the right words. "Beako, I—"

Before he could finish, Petra poked her head into the library. "Subaru! There you are!" She beamed, stepping in with a tray of snacks and tea. Her bubbly demeanor was as bright as ever, but Subaru couldn’t help noticing the way she glanced at him, her cheeks slightly pink.

"Petra? What are you doing here?" Subaru asked, trying to act natural.

"I thought you might be hungry," Petra said cheerfully, placing the tray on the nearest table. "After everything last night, you probably need to refuel, right?"

Beatrice shot Petra a subtle glare, but the younger girl pretended not to notice as she sat beside Subaru.

Subaru rubbed the back of his neck, laughing awkwardly. "Uh, thanks, Petra. You really didn’t have to go through the trouble."

"It’s no trouble at all," Petra replied, her eyes sparkling.

Subaru could feel the tension building in the room as Beatrice and Petra exchanged subtle looks. He was about to suggest they all go for a walk to lighten the mood when Meili appeared in the doorway, her mischievous grin on full display.

"Wow, Big Bro," Meili said, leaning against the doorframe. "Hiding out in the library, huh? And with Beako and Petra already here? I guess I’m late to the party."

Subaru groaned internally. "Meili, it’s not what it looks like—"

"Oh, don’t worry," Meili interrupted, stepping into the room and plopping onto the couch. "I just came to say hi. But it’s nice to see everyone getting along so well after last night."

The air in the room grew even heavier as Beatrice and Petra both shot Meili sharp looks, while Subaru struggled to keep his composure.

"Okay, that’s it," Subaru said, standing up. "I’m going to the garden. Fresh air. You should all join me. Separately. Later."

Before anyone could argue, Subaru bolted from the room, leaving the three girls to exchange pointed glances.

---

In the garden, Subaru finally let out a long sigh. "This is getting out of hand," he muttered.

"Having trouble keeping up, Subaru?"

Subaru turned to see Ryuzu sitting calmly on a bench, a knowing smile on her face.

"Oh, Ryuzu," Subaru said, trying to sound casual. "I didn’t see you there."

"I figured you might come here to clear your head," Ryuzu said, patting the spot next to her. "You’ve had quite the busy morning, haven’t you?"

Subaru hesitated before sitting down. "You have no idea."

Ryuzu chuckled softly. "Actually, I think I do. You’ve found yourself at the center of something quite unique, haven’t you?"

"Unique isn’t the word I’d use," Subaru muttered, his face in his hands.

Ryuzu leaned closer, her voice gentle. "Whatever you’re feeling, Subaru, just remember that we care about you deeply. Each of us in our own way."

Subaru looked at her, surprised by her calm demeanor. "Ryuzu, I…"

Before he could finish, the sound of footsteps interrupted them. Subaru turned to see Pandora approaching, her serene smile as radiant as ever.

"Good morning, Subaru," Pandora said, her voice like silk. She glanced at Ryuzu. "Am I interrupting something?"

Ryuzu shook her head. "Not at all. I was just giving Subaru some advice."

Pandora stepped closer, her eyes locking onto Subaru’s. "I wanted to thank you again for last night. It meant a great deal to all of us."

Subaru’s face turned bright red as he stammered, "Y-You don’t have to thank me! Really!"

Pandora’s smile widened slightly as she sat on the other side of him. "Regardless, I felt it was important to say. You’ve brought something into our lives that we’ve all been missing for a long time."

Subaru felt like his head was spinning. How had things escalated to this point?

---

Back in the mansion, Otto leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping his coffee and grinning to himself. Watching Subaru navigate this mess was proving to be the most entertaining part of his week.

Ram entered the kitchen, her sharp gaze narrowing at Otto. "You’re smiling like an idiot. What’s so amusing?"

"Oh, nothing," Otto replied, suppressing a laugh. "Just enjoying the chaos."

Ram rolled her eyes. "If Subaru’s involved, I’m sure it’s ridiculous."

Otto’s grin widened. "You have no idea."
