Hearts Entwined in a Fractured World

Part 7: Whispers of the Heart

The night in the library with Beatrice lingered in Subaru’s mind like a gentle melody, soothing yet bittersweet. Her vulnerability had touched something deep within him, and their kiss had solidified a bond he hadn’t fully realized until now. But as dawn broke, Subaru knew his life wasn’t about to grow simpler. The mansion was filled with people who relied on him, who cared for him in ways that made his heart ache and his resolve waver.

Subaru found himself caught in a web of emotions he couldn’t untangle. Each relationship was unique, each connection precious. Yet, as those bonds deepened, so too did the complexities that came with them.

---

The morning air was crisp as Subaru made his way to the courtyard. The warmth of the sun filtered through the trees, casting golden light over the grounds. There, he spotted Petra carefully arranging flowers along the path. Her face lit up when she saw him, her youthful energy a stark contrast to the heavy thoughts weighing him down.

"Good morning, Subaru!" Petra called out, waving as she hurried toward him.

"Morning, Petra," Subaru replied with a smile. "You’re up early."

Petra beamed, her cheeks flushed from her work in the sun. "I wanted to make everything look nice for you. You’ve been working so hard lately, so I thought maybe I could help brighten your day!"

Subaru’s heart softened at her earnestness. Petra’s unwavering devotion was both endearing and humbling, and he often wondered if he truly deserved the faith she placed in him.

"You’re incredible, Petra," Subaru said, ruffling her hair gently. "I don’t know what I’d do without you."

Petra’s cheeks turned a deeper shade of pink, and she looked down, fidgeting with the hem of her dress. "Subaru… do you mean that?"

"Of course I do," Subaru replied without hesitation. "You’re like a little sister to me."

The words slipped out before Subaru could stop himself, and as soon as he saw Petra’s expression falter, he realized his mistake. Her bright smile dimmed, and she quickly turned away, hiding her face from him.

"Petra? Are you okay?" Subaru asked, concern lacing his voice.

"I’m fine!" Petra said quickly, her voice slightly shaky. "I just… remembered I have more flowers to arrange. I’ll see you later, Subaru!"

Before he could say anything else, Petra hurried off, leaving Subaru standing alone in the courtyard. A pang of guilt settled in his chest. He hadn’t meant to hurt her, but it was clear that his words had cut deeper than he’d anticipated.

Later that day, Subaru found himself in the kitchen, where Meili sat perched on a counter, munching on a piece of fruit. She looked up as he entered, her mischievous grin lighting up her face.

"Well, if it isn’t my favorite plaything," Meili teased, swinging her legs back and forth. "What brings you here, big brother?"

Subaru rolled his eyes at her nickname for him but couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. Meili’s playful nature was a welcome distraction from the heaviness in his heart. "I came to check on you. Are you causing trouble again?"

"Who, me?" Meili feigned innocence, batting her lashes dramatically. "I’d never."

Subaru chuckled, leaning against the counter beside her. "Somehow, I don’t believe that."

Meili smirked, taking another bite of her fruit. "You’re too easy to mess with, Subaru. That’s why I like you."

There was a hint of something deeper in her words, something Subaru couldn’t quite place. Meili’s playful exterior often masked her true feelings, and Subaru wondered how much she kept hidden beneath that cheeky grin.

"Meili," Subaru said, his tone softening. "You know you don’t have to act tough around me, right? You can be yourself."

Meili’s smile faltered for a moment, and she looked down at the half-eaten fruit in her hands. "I know," she murmured. "But being myself hasn’t worked out too well for me in the past. People usually leave."

Subaru’s heart ached at her words. He reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I’m not going anywhere, Meili. You’re stuck with me."

Meili glanced up at him, her violet eyes shining with an emotion she rarely showed. For a brief moment, her tough façade cracked, and she looked every bit the young girl she truly was.

"Thanks, Subaru," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

As the day went on, Subaru found himself wandering the estate in search of Ryuzu. He finally found her in the gardens, tending to a patch of herbs with meticulous care. The older Ryuzu clone exuded a calm serenity that always seemed to put Subaru at ease.

"Ryuzu," Subaru called out, approaching her. "Hard at work, as always."

Ryuzu glanced up, her gentle smile welcoming him. "Mr. Natsuki, it’s good to see you. What brings you to my humble corner of the estate?"

"I needed some of your wisdom," Subaru admitted, sitting down on a nearby bench. "Things are… complicated."

Ryuzu’s eyes softened as she set aside her tools and joined him on the bench. "Complicated, you say? Does it have anything to do with the young ladies who care for you?"

Subaru sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Is it that obvious?"

Ryuzu chuckled softly. "You’re a kind soul, Mr. Natsuki. But kindness often comes with its own burdens."

Subaru looked at her, his heart heavy. "I don’t want to hurt anyone, Ryuzu. But no matter what I do, it feels like someone will get hurt."

Ryuzu placed a hand on his shoulder, her touch comforting. "That is the nature of love, Mr. Natsuki. It is both beautiful and painful, a force that binds us together even as it challenges us. But I believe you will find a way to navigate it with the same determination you’ve shown in everything else."

Subaru nodded, her words giving him a small measure of comfort. He knew she was right—there were no easy answers, no clear paths. But he also knew he couldn’t run from his feelings or the feelings of those around him.

---

That night, as Subaru lay in bed, his thoughts drifted to the people who had come to mean so much to him—Beatrice, Petra, Meili, Ryuzu, and even the haunting presence of Pandora. Each of them had touched his heart in different ways, and each of them deserved the love and care he wanted to give.

But how could he balance it all? How could he protect their hearts without breaking his own?

As sleep began to claim him, Subaru made a silent vow. No matter how difficult the road ahead, he would face it with courage and compassion. He would find a way to honor the bonds he had forged and ensure that no one was left behind.

For now, though, he allowed himself a moment of peace, letting the warmth of their love carry him into dreams.
