Kyle was beginning to become frustrated with Stan's constant avoidance of him. He hated that their relationship always went this way, the distance between them happening so frequently now. He was practically begging Stan to be around him when they weren't fighting witches. But Stan was colder now, only focused on fighting witches, when they weren't fighting together Stan would just vanish, and become avoidant.
One day Kyle had gotten an idea, as school ended he snuck up onto the school rooftop, he had packed a small homemade lunch for both of them, two small sandwiches and fruit, he set the two containers on the bench. He pulled out his phone and texted Stan a quick message
Stan, there's a grief seed on the roof of the school! Can you help me with it?
It took Stan a bit to get to the roof but when he did his expression faltered seeing Kyle just sitting on the bench. Instantly he knew something was up.
"There's no witch is there..?" Stan asked, his tone slightly frustrated,
"No Stan there isn't..." Kyle sighed, "I just thought it would be nice for us to spend some time together!"
Stan looked like he was going to object but there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. He sat on the bench next to Kyle, he took Stan's hand carefully.
"Are you okay..? Like I mean of course neither of us are okay after all that but... Stan what's been happening.. with you... with us?" Kyle asked,
"Kyle, have you told anyone who.. isn't a magical girl, what you are?" Stan asked,
"No..? Stan, did you tell someone? Did they find out?" Kyle asked, his tone quickly filling with worry,
"No, no one found out dude." Stan answered flatly, brushing some of the hair out of his face, "Kyle, why are you so desperate to protect this town..?"
"Stan? Are you joking? Dude it's our whole purpose as magical girls! We have to fight to protect the people of this town—" Kyle began before Stan cut him off with a scoff
"Dude you can't be serious! Seriously, what the hell have the people of this town done to have us risking our lives out there!?" Kyle tried to speak but Stan continued, his tone darkening with each word, "You know, before Heidi died, she told me about how she had to save you... that Witch's Kiss you got... just think about it, do you even remember what the hell you were going to do!?"
"I-I don't but Stan—"
"A Witch's Kiss makes people do awful things! You could've killed someone or yourself in that state! You're lucky it was Heidi that found you!" Stan shouted,
"What the hell are you talking about dude!? Why are you bringing up this shit now!?" Kyle cried out, he felt overwhelmed, he'd never seen Stan like this before...
"Kyle, I want you to be completely honest! What do you think someone would do if they found you like that!? They would've thought you were on drugs or something!"
"Do you think I don't know that!? Just what the hell are you getting at!?"
"The people of this town should be more thankful to us! If we didn't, so many lives would be ruined! Kyle, I think we should stop hunting witches for a bit!" Stan exclaimed, a strange seriousness in his voice,
"What the hell is wrong with you!? People will die, Stan! What would you do if it was someone in your family!? What if it was your dad—"
"You're acting like I still care! The people in this town don't give a shit about us! Yet you're still insistent on protecting them!"
"Jesus Christ dude! You're like being around a black hole that just sucks the life out of everything! Do you not think that this shits hard for me too!? Do you think that I haven't been struggling too!? I just want to be able to stay with my fucking boyfriend, but someone turned into a pessimistic asshole! It's fourth grade all over again Stan!" Kyle shouted, tears were beginning to well up in his eyes,
"There you go again! Always focusing on the damn past! Why do I even try!? I'm leaving!" Stan shouted, Kyle tried to stop him but Stan ran down the rooftop steps back into the building, slamming the hallway steps behind him.
Kyle felt crushed... there was this deep loneliness he'd never felt before, a harsh pressure on his chest, he felt like he could barely recognize Stan. He'd never seen Stan this distant, so he packed up the two uneaten containers and slid them back into his backpack. He could see the way the sun was beginning to sink over the horizon. He began walking home, he felt so alone...
When he got to his front door he unlocked it and stepped inside, and when he looked up seeing his mom drinking wine at the table, he felt like he couldn't hold his emotions anymore...
"Mom... can we talk..?"
