"peterkin came by my house," oscar explained. "asked 'bout a gun and scooter." a sheepish look shone across his face, as if he did something wrong.
"a gun?" nalani raised her eyebrows, scoffing slightly, "what did jj do now?"
he shrugged his shoulders, "not sure. probably something dumb, like always."
nalani nodded her head as they walked towards the chateau, sitting in the silence between them.
"it doesn't help that your ass was the one shooting a gun." john b yelled over to jj, throwing an empty can of beer on the floor.
"you know what i should've done?." jj argued back. "i should've let topper drown your ass."
nalani looked over at oscar in confusion. topper was her older sister's boyfriend, who she didn't like much, but he didn't seem like the type to try and drown john b. he was too much of a goodie two-shoes, a massive kiss-ass.
john b scoffed loudly, "yeah, because topper was gonna kill me?"
"sure looked like it."
they continue to bicker aimlessly, arguing over wether or not they should go down into the marsh. personally, nalani thought that they should do it.
her ears perk up at the sound of her name. "you got the key to cameron's big boat, right?" jj says to john b, "there's scuba gear. we borrow that, and then go down to the wreck this afternoon, and that's what's gonna save you, man."
he turns his head around to face the little girl, "your dad won't notice if your scuba gear goes missing for a day or two, right?" jj nods, raising his eyebrows at her.
she shrugged her shoulders again. she didn't like the idea of stealing from her dad, even if they were going to give it back. her dad never really liked her much and she didn't want to give him another reason to. "maybe. depends if he's gonna go scuba diving in the next day or two."
"well, can you help us?" john b looks at nalani, "just keep him off the boat while i go in and get the gear?"
"i guess, but guys--" she sighs, "rose just gave me back my phone, like two days ago, i really don't want it to get taken again."
oscar laughed at her remark, shaking his head at his bestfriend. he looked into her eyes and instead of seeing her usual chirpy, happy mood, she looked upset. "you don't have to do it."
nalani shakes her head, exhaling. "it's okay, i'll do it. what's the plan?"
nalani's stomach swirled weirdly as she enters her house, unlike the day before. the difference today is that nobody expected her to be here and also she wasn't sure if the one person who was always on her side, rafe, was here.
"lani?" a voice came from one of the rooms facing the entryway and when she turns to face the sound, she sees her twin sister, wheezie. "what are you doing?"
"don't call me that." nalani snapped at her, rolling her eyes as she does so. "where's dad?"
"upstairs, i think." she answered, looking remorseful. "i- why don't you talk to me anymore?"
"you know why." the blonde begins to walk up the stairs before wheezie forcefully grabs her wrist.
"that's not my fault, nalani." she says through gritted teeth, "it's not my fault that dad-"
"that he loves you more. i never said it was, but i'm still allowed to hate you for it."
and with that nalani stormed up the stairs, leaving her sister at the bottom. leaving one more small part of herself at the bottom, chipping away at who she thought she was.
