nalani slowly passed her father's office, hearing sarah's voice. now, she wasn't a snitch. if sarah was in there she wouldn't tell her dad, she'd just use the information for a little bit of leverage. she placed her hand on the door knob, turning it around and slowly creaking the door open. her eyes widened as she spotted john b on the couch of the room with blood on his t-shirt, and sarah sat next to him.

"john b...?" she whispered, and she felt like her lungs were collapsing. john b was sat in her friend, her big brother, and he was sat in her house with the person she truly hated. "what are you doing?"

john b looked up with a panicked gaze, his breath heavy. he then glanced at sarah, unsure of what to say to nalani. "i got hurt while running from dfcs and...sarah helped me."

"you couldn't have just...gone to the hospital?" she slowly closed the door behind her, still feeling uncertainty about the situation. she was feeling betrayed by one of the people she thought she could trust most. "or i don't know, your house?"

"the- the cops were- are after me, nales." he sighs, sitting up and wincing at his injury. he placed a hand on his side, taking a deep breath in. "just let me rest for a second and then i'll leave, okay?"

"fine." nalani huffs loudly, jumping down on the arm chair across from the two of the teens. "but, i swear, john b. if i see you with my sister again, i'll loose it." she then stands up, exiting the room silently.

she didn't know what else to say to john b because she felt like if she said anything else, she would cry. he knew how much she hated sarah, yet he still decided to get help from her when he could've gone anywhere else. she just hoped he would stick to his word and nalani would never have to see sarah and john b that close again.

"so glad that they're still doing this." kiara says to them all as they walk onto the grass for the movie-screening, carrying a cooler. "keep calm, carry on, back to...obx life." she turns around to the others, "no? aren't you guys glad that i made you come?"

"estatic." pope says sarcastically, sitting down on the grass next to jj. jj clears his throat, adjusting his hat on his head. "i don't know, my couch was pretty comfy if i'm being honest."

"you're just being party poopers." oscar hops down, his legs slamming down on the ground on impact, making him wince. "me and nalani are excited to be here." he glances over at the girl, who is staring ahead. "right, lani?"

"huh?" she turns to him, sitting down right next to him. she smiles at him in a fake way, "yeah, sure. whatever." looking over as kiara walked away towards the drink stall.

"you okay?" he whispers, furrowing his eyebrows and leaning in so she can hear him over the chatter of the people surrounding.

nalani nodded her head slowly, exhaling softly. "yeah..." she said, "just stuff with my family, but i'm fine, i promise."

"just saw rafe." kiara sits back down, tilting her head to the side slightly. she gave two pepsi's to pope and jj, one lemonade to oscar and handed nalani a mint chocolate milkshake. "and i quote, 'tell your boy that we know what he did.' just that."

oscar whipped his head around to face his older brother, smirking at him. "okay, jj, what did you do?" he giggled, making nalani giggle at the same time.

jj scoffs loudly, shrugging his shoulders as he popped open the tab of the can. "why do you always assume that it's me?"

"maybe because you do stupid shit all the time." nalani said between giggles, taking her paper straw out of her cup and placing it on the lid so it didn't go soggy.
