it was the first week back at school after the summer, which was becoming more and more dreadful for nalani. apparently, people seem to care more who you are friends with once they get accused of murdering a sheriff. it didn't help that sarah had ran off with him, either. people were bringing it up and tormenting her about it every chance they got, it was like they forgot they were dead. she was grieving, yet they still made fun of her.

nobody used to like her last year but it was fine then because she was still friends with piper. now, she had joined the same group of girls that constantly mocked nalani. she could tell that piper didn't even like those girls, she was just doing it so she didn't get shunned. nalani understood, just a little bit, but she would never have done that to her.

she glanced down at her english paper and then to the clock, realising the class ended in five minutes and she hadn't even written anything except the date down...and it was the wrong one. she sighed softly before quickly trying to complete the thirty minute task.

the bell rang loudly and the teacher walked by, picking everyone's papers up off the desk. the woman furrowed her eyebrows when she looked at nalani's, scoffing lightly. "don't go anywhere, i need to speak to you."

she slumped down in her chair and began to fiddle with the hem of her blue school uniform jumper, chewing on her lip nervously. before she knew it, everyone had left the classroom and the teacher, - mrs douglas, - was sat in front of her, peering through her glasses. she rubbed her hands along her thighs before sighing, taking off her glasses. "well, nalani. i don't know what else to say other than i'm a little disappointed. y'know, when i got your files from last year, you seemed like such a good student. what happened?"

"last year my sister and friend weren't dead." she murmured, readjusting herself in her chair. "i think that's a reason even you..." nalani scanned her teacher up and down, "could figure out."

"don't snark me." mrs douglas leaned forward, placing her hands on nalani's desk firmly. "you've been in my class two weeks and you haven't even done a single piece of work i gave you. i understand your summer has been hard, but that is no excuse. you still have a good life, trust me."

"yeah, wouldn't you know." nalani rolled her eyes, tapping her fingers on the desk. "can i go now? i have to go before wa- my dad gets worried."

she hummed in approval, nodding her head towards the door. nalani scoffed once again, getting up and walking out the door.

when the lock clicked behind her, she took out her phone, — which was new,
due to the fact ward needed something to not make her go to the police about everything she saw, — and began to message oscar. she had given her old phone to him so they could still talk to each other, especially because they were apart so much because of school.

her fingers pressed harshly against the screen, typing in the message. the phone beeped loudly with a reply.

'i'm at the milkshake place. if you hurry, i won't drink the one i got for you.'

she smiled softly at her phone, placing it back in her blazer pocket and walking towards the milkshake pop-up store. her eyes met oscar's, spotting him sat on one of the picnic tables near by. she quickly walked over and sat across from him, taking a large sip of the mint milkshake on the table.

"hey," he furrowed his eyebrows, "that could've been mine, y'know!"

"you don't like mint, idiot." she muttered, giggling happily. her eyes fell on his rolled up sleeves and she grabbed his hand, turning his arm around to look at the pen ink all over it. "what the hell? do you not...do work at school?"

"it's cool, look." he pointed at one of the drawings, "that's a dog, but it's on a beach wearing swim gear with a surfboard," he then pointed to another spot on his arm, "and that's your name in the fancy jack daniel's font."
