Luke stood in the hallway of Alex's apartment building. With his coat draped over his arm, he stared at her closed door. He wanted to break it down, to give into his carnal desires to be with her. He wanted to pretend that everything that stood in their way had suddenly fallen away. Her eyes told the story. She wanted to be with him as bad as he wanted to be with her. He could feel it.

Taking in a deep breath, her waited for a few moments. He hoped that she would open the door and rush into his arms.

But she never did.

Hopelessly, he made his way downstairs and back out into the chill of a September sky. From behind him, a voice called.

"Luke!"

He turned around, and there she was. Now standing within feet of him on the sidewalk, she moved closer to him. Bathed in the light of the street lamps, she cast her reservations aside and kissed him. Slowly at first, gradually increasing in depth and urgency.

She led him up the stairs and back into her apartment. That night, they discovered each other's bodies for the first time, feeling in their hearts how right it was.

Luke slipped out of Alex's bed before the sun came up. He thought it better to get an early start at work and deal with the inevitable conversation about last night later. Not that he didn't enjoy it. Quite the opposite, actually. He found himself still on a cloud throughout the next day.

After stopping for coffee, he headed to the courthouse for the arraignment. Shortly after he arrived, Olivia took a seat next to him in the gallery. Amanda decided not to come, not wanting to create more enemies. Luke understood, and the last thing they needed was more trouble.

As people started to file in, he caught sight of Alex. Shortly after, the defense came in with their client. This couldn't be over quick enough, he thought to himself. He watched as Alex stood at the podium, lobbying for his attacker to be held without bond. And it worked. Remand to Rikers without bail. An early win for the prosecution.

After everyone else streamed out of the courtoom, Luke made his way up to the front to see Alex. The look on her face read as nervous.

"How long until this goes to trial?"

He watched as she stuffed papers into her briefcase.

"Well, his lawyer is most likely going to try for a plea."

"Don't tell me you're going to entertain that idea."

She smirked and swung the strap of her briefcase over her shoulder.

"Of course not, but it's fun to watch them sweat."

They walked out of the courthouse together, neither with a mention of the night before. That is, until Luke noticed that Alex had stopped behind him. He turned around to face her.

"Are we really not going to talk about what happened last night?" She asked, arms crossed.

He scuffed the bottom of his shoe against the sidewalk, looking at the ground.

"I'm not sure what you want me to say."

"We had sex." She said in a strangled whisper, closing the distance between them.

"Yes, we did."

Their attitudes were in complete contrast. Alex with a serious look, Luke with his usual boyish grin.

"That can't happen again," she said, her voice still lowered. "In fact, it never happened. Okay?"

She brushed past him, leaving him standing alone on the sidewalk. The grin stayed on his face as he watched her walk away.
