Luke and Alex had both agreed to change into more appropriate attire before heading to the beach. As soon as he got home, Luke slipped on a plain white tank top, lime green board shorts, and flip flops. He then took the short drive to Alex's place to pick her up. He nearly lost his breath at the sight of her as she cascaded down the front steps.
She was wearing a sheer white coverup that barely covered her shoulders and a black bikini top could be seen underneath. Showing off her long sun-kissed legs, she wore a short pair of light acid washed denim shorts. The ends appeared to be frayed from years of consistent wear. And, of course, she had flip flops on.
My, oh my, was she gorgeous.
It was all he could do to avoid touching her. But he knew there would be plenty of time for that later.
After opening the truck door for her, they took off down the highway. They engaged in small talk during their drive before finally reaching their destination.
Luke took Alex's hand as they made their way to the water's edge. They both enjoyed the freedom that came with being several towns away. There was no one to judge them or report back that they'd be seen together. At that moment, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
The drifted away from each other temporarily, individually delighting in the rolling waves rushing over their ankles. As Luke walked ahead, he felt a spout of water cover his back. He turned back to find Alex with a mischievous grin on her face.
"Oh, it's on now."
"No!" She shrieked, breaking into a run over the sand.
Luke finally closed in on her, grabbing her by the waist and sweeping her into a playful embrace. As the waves lapped over their feet they kissed, their tongues dancing against each other's in perfect harmony.
Afterwards, they lay together on the beach. Both of them with sand adhered to their damp skin, they cozied up beneath the setting sun. Luke continually stole glances at his friend turned lover. And he found himself wondering how they had only just now gotten together. He was crazy about her and hoped that she felt the same way about him. The thought of them going their separate ways tonight put a nasty feeling in his stomach. He didn't want their time together to end.
After they watched the sun go down, Luke drove Alex home and walked her to her door. She invited him in for a short moment, if only to give them privacy. His high began to die down as he realized the night was coming to a close.
"I had a great time today." She said, running her fingers through her slightly damp locks.
"Same here."
He stepped into her space, taking her into his arms and relaxing as she put her arms around his neck. As he gazed down into her eyes, he came to the realization right then and there that he had fallen in love with her. No matter what threatened to stand in their way, there was no changing that. As sure as he was of that fact, wondering if she felt the same was terrifying to him. And he didn't dare ask her tonight and risk ruining their perfect day.
He leaned down and kissed her, content to linger as long as she'd allow. When she broke contact, he knew it was time for him to go.
"I'll see you at work tomorrow." He whispered.
She stayed silent for a moment before a mischievous smile came across her face. He was pleasantly surprised as she grabbed him by the shirt collar and pulled his lips on top of hers. Her tongue danced across his before she finally released him, leaving him drunk with desire.
"Goodnight, Luke."

Luke woke up with a smile on his face and contentment in his heart. The feeling he had all day yesterday was like something straight from the cinema. He wanted to bottle it up and consume it twenty-four/seven. As his relationship with Alex progressed, he found himself becoming more of a romantic. He had always had that way about him, but it had only intensified as of late. He wasn't sure if Alex was still riding the high of their day together yesterday. But he wanted her to know how much it had meant to him.
Since their relationship had to be kept under wraps, Luke had to get creative. Before he'd even had his coffee, he was on the phone with Matles Florist. Two dozen long stemmed red roses were to be delivered to Alex's office early that afternoon. And the card to be attached? It was a love note from her no-so-secret admirer. His stomach did backflips as headed into work.
