The next day:

Get up, take a shower, get dressed, then coffee before work. That had been Alex's morning routine ever since she got back to New York. But today, she was running late. Today, she was behind. And she hated being behind.

She hadn't had time to stop at the coffee shop down the street, and the pot at work was empty when she'd last checked. Going through these documents without caffeine was a special kind of torture. She resolved to herself to find a stopping point to go grab a cup.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and there stood Luke holding two disposable cups. Almost as if he knew of her dilemma.

"The coffee pot in the squad room is broken, and I wasn't sure if you'd stopped to get some on your way in."

She stood up and made her way to him.

"You're a lifesaver. I didn't have time to stop this morning."

She carefully took a sip, closing her eyes in satisfaction as the warmth coated her throat.

"How much do I owe you?"

He waved her off and took a drink from his cup.

"I haven't seen much of you the past couple of days. I wasn't sure if you'd left us again."

"Ha, ha," she said sarcastically, sitting down at her desk. "I think you all are stuck with me for awhile."

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a smile come across his face. Her plan to keep her distance from him wasn't working out too well.

"Well, thank you for the coffee. I should get back to these."

"Yeah, of course. Anytime."

She watched as he walked out her office, swearing she could sense a tinge of disappointment on his face.
