Alex laid awake in bed, unable to even attempt to find sleep. She was too worried about Luke. She felt an anger rise in her chest everytime she thought about the person who did this to him. She would make them pay in the courtroom, no doubt about it.

As hard as she'd tried to squash her growing feelings for him, it wasn't working. She wanted so badly to be at his bedside, taking care of and watching out for him. She must've stopped herself from going back up there at least half a dozen times. How could someone be so close and yet so far out of reach at the same time? It drove her crazy.

Determined to make it to the hospital at a reasonable hour, Alex worked through lunch. She put off what she could until the next day and tied up lose ends on the rest. On her way out the door, she ran into Olivia.

"Hey. Have you heard anything about Luke?"

"I think they're going to keep him another night, but he's recovering well so far." Olivia informed her.

"That's good. Do you have any idea who might've done this?"

"We're looking into a few things, but it's not concrete yet. I'll keep you posted."

As Olivia made her way back into her office, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that she was holding something back. Did they already have a suspect?

She tried to push her suspicions aside and complete the work she had in front of her. Luckily it has been a lighter day. She worked through lunch, just as she'd planned, and set aside a couple of menial tasks for tomorrow.

After she arrived at the hospital, she made her way up to Luke's room and slipped into the open door. It only took a moment for him to notice her presence and open his one good eye. Confused, he looked out the window.

"It's still daylight. How'd you manage that?"

Alex smiled and set her purse on a small table in the corner.

"I had a light day and thought you might like the company."

She waited for confirmation before he finally tapped the seat beside him.

"Any changes? You seem to be a little more rested."

"It's nearly impossible to get any rest in this place. There's always somebody in and out of this damn room."

"Hopefully they'll let you out soon."

As much as she tried to be a beacon of encouragement, it was glaringly obvious how much of a toll this way taking on him. Neither of them knowing what to say, it remained quiet for awhile.

"I'm sorry I'm not good company right now."

"Don't apologize. I should probably leave and let you get some rest."

He didn't protest, letting her leave with little more than a wave. As she walked to her car, the nagging feeling of wanting to stay with him remained. And no matter what she did, she couldn't shake it.
