Reverie sat on her bed, staring at her phone. The room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from her screen. She hesitated, her fingers hovering over the keyboard as she typed and deleted the same message over and over again. “How are you?” seemed so simple, yet it weighed heavily on her heart.

After a deep breath, she finally sent the message.

"Hey, Aries. How have you been?"

For a few minutes, she waited anxiously, watching the three little dots that indicated he was typing. Her heart raced. She missed him - more than she wanted to admit. Every day, memories of their time together would flash through her mind. She remembered how they used to talk late into the night, sharing secrets, laughing at silly jokes. He was her first love, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t forget him.

The phone buzzed, and she quickly opened the message.

"I’m fine. Busy with stuff."

It was short. Distant. Reverie stared at the screen, her heart sinking. His reply lacked warmth, the kind of warmth he used to have when they were together. It was as if he was only responding out of obligation, not because he wanted to talk to her.

But tonight, it wasn’t just any night. It was his night - Aries’ birthday. Midnight was only moments away, and Reverie had been debating whether she should text him or not. Finally, as the clock struck 00:00, she typed another message, her heart racing faster than before.

"Happy birthday, Aries! 🎉🎂 I baked a cake for you. I can bring it over tomorrow if you want :)"

She stared at the screen, hoping that this would spark something more between them - something warmer, more familiar. They used to celebrate all their special days together. She would make him his favorite desserts, and they’d spend hours laughing, talking, just being happy.

But after a few minutes, her phone buzzed again.

"Thanks. No need."

Reverie’s heart sank. His response was colder than she expected. No enthusiasm, no curiosity about the cake she made for him. Just two words.

Thanks. No need.

Her fingers hovered over the screen as she reread his message, disbelief settling in. She had stayed up late, thinking of him, wishing to reconnect just a little. But this was his response. Dry. Uninterested. It felt like a slap in the face, a reminder that he had moved on while she was still stuck in the past, holding onto pieces of their history.

Feeling a lump form in her throat, she tried to distract herself by scrolling through social media. But the ache only grew worse. Her worst fears were confirmed. Aries had been posting pictures of Vivienne, his new girlfriend, everywhere. The captions were filled with affection, and the pictures showed them together, smiling, holding hands, looking like the perfect couple. There were dozens of posts, far more than Aries ever shared when he was with Reverie.

It was like a dagger to her heart. Each picture felt like a reminder that she had been replaced. He never posted pictures of her like that. With Vivienne, it seemed like he didn’t care who saw how happy they were. But when they were together, he always kept things private, like he didn’t want people to know. And now, it was as if their relationship had never even existed.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she clutched her phone tighter. "Why didn’t you treat me like that, Aries?" she thought bitterly, the ache in her chest growing stronger. She felt played, as if their time together had meant nothing to him.

But no matter how hurt she was, a part of her still longed for him. She missed the way he used to look at her, the way he made her feel like she was the only girl in the world. The memories of their late-night phone calls, the times they spent together - everything flooded back to her in waves.
