A Rose Between the Thorns

Chapter 11

The light blades continued to come head on at us, but Yami had it worse having to deflect the swords as he also dealt with Patri. I wanted to help but I was preoccupied with keeping my own swords at bay, however I couldn't keep it up much longer, it appeared the spell was using up more mana than I had anticipated and it didn't help that I had to use two portals to get here and recovery magic when I arrived.

I wasn't going to let these swords beat me though, not when I had just gained control over such a powerful spell, like Asta says I'm not giving up. With one final push I was able to send the wind spell right at the remaining swords which soon deflected on impact leaving me able to end the spell.

"Ahh, that was amazing Rose!" Asta shouted, no doubt he was keeping an eye on both me and Yami, not only to learn from Yami, but also to protect me. "Thanks Asta, it wasn't easy, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of this whole magic business." I shouted back, watching Yami and Patri's fight.

"Hang on, don't I know you from somewhere?" Oh Yami you don't know the half of it. "Never mind. I'm pretty sure I'd remember someone who could use light magic." They went back and forth, Patri firing his spells whilst Yami used his sense of Qi and katana to detect and deflect those spells.

In truth it was incredible to watch the power of a Magic knight Captain and Yami wasn't even using half of his ability, oh Julius you couldn't be more wrong about me. "So who are you and what's your angle. Do you go around hurting people for kicks?" Yami asked as he tried to land a hit on Patri, but because of his light magic Yami couldn't keep up and so Patri was far enough away to look down upon Yami.

"My angle?" Patri summoned more light swords from behind ready to aim them at Yami. "Let me tell you a story." Then he released the light swords all at once, but Yami was ready and able to deflect them all.

"Once upon a time in a certain village there lived people with tremendous magic power. They were special, greatly loved by the mana of this world." He's telling Yami the story of the elves. I wish I could interrupt and tell Patri the truth, but his pain and desire for revenge would be to strong, he wouldn't believe a word I said.

"They could control weather at will and manipulate the minerals, their powers were truly god like. Indeed those outside their village came to revere them as Devine beings, but then the peoples feelings began to change, their respect and admiration became fear and envy. They slaughtered their gods in a cowardly surprise attack and stole their power."

I listened intently as Patri spoke being able to fill in the images and gaps in my mind with everything I knew of the elves destruction, but Yami wasn't anywhere near as concerned by the story. "What kind of story is that. Who cares, you planin' on becoming a bard or something?" I cared, but obviously he wouldn't know that.

Yami ran at Patri as more light swords came this way, he continued to deflect them as he went, scaling the wall to get to his opponent. "Well I've got a story of my won you might like to here. Once there was a young man with a bright mind and a pure heart his father was a fisherman who sent him out to work the sea at a young age." As I watched Yami scale the wall whilst deflecting Patri's attacks and telling his story, I also kept an eye on Valtos whilst scanning the room incase he or Patri tried a sneak attack.

"Then one day his boat got wrecked. He fell into the water and washed up on an unknown shore. He looked and acted differently then the people there, so he got the crap beat out of him a lot, but that was ok 'cause he turned around and beat the crap out of them and then became a badass squad boss. The end." Yami finished whilst taking a final slash at Patri mid air, before Patri vanished and reappeared on the ground beside Valtos, and Yami landed not far from me and Asta.
