Chapter sixteenAmelia woke up the next morning to the gentle light of dawn streaming through the windows. Leora was already stirring in the bed next to hers, and the two girls shared a sleepy smile as they stretched and got ready to start their day. They took turns freshening up in the bathroom, and soon enough they were standing side by side at the mirror, their Hogwarts uniforms neatly buttoned and their ties perfectly in place.
"Fancy a bit of makeup this morning?" Leora asked, giving Amelia a grin as she reached into her small pouch filled with neatly organized cosmetics. Amelia nodded with a small laugh, and the two girls began applying a light layer of makeup, nothing too dramatic but enough to add a touch of polish. Amelia swept a gentle shade of shadow across her lids, framing her eyes with mascara, while Leora applied a bit of blush to add warmth to her cheeks. They exchanged advice, laughing over their lack of precision, and soon enough, they were ready.
As they made their way to breakfast, the girls chatted about their schedules for the day, mentally preparing for their classes. The castle was filled with the soft sounds of students making their way to the Great Hall, the hum of morning conversation drifting through the corridors. When they finally reached the hall, they joined the lively Gryffindor table, settling in with plates of eggs, bacon, and warm toast. Amelia glanced down the table, her heart skipping as she saw Fred a few seats away. He caught her eye, a playful grin spreading across his face as he lifted his goblet in a mock toast. Amelia rolled her eyes with a smirk but couldn't help the smile tugging at her lips. She turned her attention back to her plate, her cheeks a bit pink.
The morning passed smoothly, with Amelia attending her Transfiguration class alongside Leora. As they settled into their seats, Professor McGonagall swept into the room, her robes billowing behind her as she launched into a lesson on advanced animal transfiguration. Amelia tried to focus, taking careful notes and practicing her wand movements, but halfway through the lesson, a small folded piece of parchment landed on her desk. Glancing around to make sure no one else had noticed, she discreetly opened it.
In Fred's familiar scrawl, the note read, "Meet me in the common room after curfew? Got a plan brewing." She suppressed a grin, hiding the note in her bag as she tried to refocus on the lesson, her mind wandering with curiosity over what Fred might be up to. The thought of sneaking out to meet him added a thrill to her day, and she felt the excitement bubbling up within her as the class continued.
When lunchtime arrived, Amelia and Leora joined Hermione at the Gryffindor table. Hermione, being a year younger, always seemed thrilled to catch up with her sister during meals, and the two exchanged stories about their morning classes. Amelia noticed that Hermione's gaze kept flicking over toward Ron, who was sitting a little ways down the table, giving her occasional glances and shy smiles. Amelia nudged Hermione with a knowing grin. "Anything going on there?" she teased, gesturing subtly toward Ron.
Hermione's cheeks flushed as she looked down at her plate, trying to suppress a smile. "Oh, nothing," she replied, but her eyes sparkled with that unmistakable gleam. Amelia shared a smirk with Leora, feeling a pang of happiness for her younger sister. It seemed that the little crush Hermione had nurtured for years was finally blossoming into something more. After lunch, Amelia and Leora parted ways with Hermione and headed to their afternoon classes. The hours passed in a blur of wand work, notes, and lectures, and soon enough, the day's lessons were over. Amelia and Leora had made plans to study together in the library, a ritual they both valued for the balance of productivity and fun it provided. They found a quiet corner, setting out their books and parchment as they worked through their assignments, sharing notes, and helping each other review complex spells.
Between moments of studying, they whispered about their favorite professors and exchanged stories of old pranks Fred and George had pulled. Every now and then, they'd break into laughter, earning a stern glance from Madam Pince, who seemed to have an uncanny ability to detect any hint of noise. When the clock struck nine, they reluctantly gathered their books, knowing they'd need to return to Gryffindor Tower before curfew. They walked back through the castle, their laughter echoing softly through the emptying corridors. By the time they reached the common room, the day's excitement had left them both feeling pleasantly tired.
