Liam's POV
The morning light streamed through the windows, casting a soft glow in the mansion. Liam stretched, a hint of a hangover clawing at his mind. He glanced at the empty space beside him, Betty having slipped out early. He wasn't sure how he felt about their night together—was it a mistake or a rekindling of something real?
His thoughts were interrupted by a sharp knock on the front door. It sounded urgent, almost frantic. With a sigh, he threw on a shirt and headed downstairs, his head still clouded from the previous night. As he reached the entrance, he opened the door to find his parents standing there, their faces a mixture of concern and disappointment.
"Liam, we need to talk," his mother said, stepping inside with an authoritative air.
His father followed, a stern look etched on his face. "We saw you with Betty last night."
Liam felt a cold knot twist in his stomach. "Yeah, and? What's the big deal?" he replied defensively.
Liam's Parents' POV
"Liam," his mother began, her voice steady yet tinged with worry, "you need to understand. We've always had certain expectations for you. Betty was never the right fit for our family. You know that."
His father interjected, "She's not the type of woman we envisioned for you. You have responsibilities, an image to uphold, and she doesn't fit that mold."
Liam clenched his fists, anger bubbling beneath the surface. "I'm not a child anymore. I can choose who I want to be with. You don't get to dictate my life!"
"Liam, think about the company," his father said, frustration rising in his tone. "You're the heir, and marrying the right person is vital. We can't have someone like Betty dragging you down."
"Someone like Betty?" Liam exclaimed, incredulous. "What do you mean? Because she's not a privileged princess like you expect?"
His mother stepped closer, her expression softening. "We just want what's best for you. You need stability, a partner who can help you navigate the pressures of the family business."
Elara's POV
Meanwhile, Elara was in the kitchen, tidying up and trying to drown out the noise of the confrontation. She could hear their voices rising, a mix of anger and disappointment. Each raised tone felt like a punch to her gut, reminding her of her place in this world.
As she washed the dishes, her heart sank further. She tried to ignore the dread pooling inside her. But the tension was palpable, and when she caught snippets of the conversation, she couldn't help but feel a growing sense of anxiety.
Suddenly, the kitchen door swung open, and Liam stood there, his expression dark and stormy.
"Get out here, Elara!" he barked.
Elara's heart raced as she wiped her hands on her apron, hesitating before stepping into the living room. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and she could sense the disappointment radiating from Liam's parents.
"What's going on?" she asked softly, looking at Liam, but he didn't answer. Instead, he shot her a glare that sent a chill down her spine.
Liam's POV
"Do you see what you've done?" Liam's voice was icy as he pointed an accusatory finger at her. "You've ruined everything!"
Elara's heart sank as she looked at him, confusion and hurt evident in her eyes. "I didn't mean to—"
"Shut up!" he snapped, cutting her off. "You're nothing but a black sheep in this family. Since the moment you walked into my life, everything has gone to hell!"
Her breath hitched, and she felt her knees weaken beneath her. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The hurtful words hung in the air, sharp and painful, making it hard to breathe.
Liam continued, his anger spilling over. "I can't believe you thought you could just waltz in here and act like you belong! You've made my life a mess."
Elara felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She wanted to defend herself, to explain that she was just trying to help, but the way Liam looked at her made her feel small, insignificant. She bit her lip, trying to keep the tears at bay.
"I hate what you've done to me," he cursed, his voice rising. "You're just a mistake I made, and now you're ruining my chance with Betty!"
Liam's Parents' POV
Liam's mother looked at Elara with pity, her heart aching for the girl caught in the crossfire. But she also felt a sense of anger at the girl for what her presence had done to Liam's life. "Maybe it's time for you to find a different job, dear," she suggested gently, but firmly.
"I—" Elara started but was cut off by Liam's father.
"Leave, Elara," he commanded. "You've overstayed your welcome."
As the harsh words echoed in the room, Elara felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her. Tears fell freely now, and she couldn't help but take a step back, her heart shattering.
"Get out!" Liam shouted, the hurt and frustration mingling in his voice. "Just get out!"
Elara's POV
Feeling utterly defeated, Elara turned away, the heaviness in her chest nearly suffocating her. She fled to her room, shutting the door behind her. As she sank to the floor, she allowed the tears to flow, each one a testament to the pain Liam had caused her. The betrayal felt like a dark cloud looming over her, and she couldn't shake the feeling that she had been nothing but a burden.
Liam's POV
After Elara had disappeared, Liam felt a mix of anger and regret. But the fury he felt toward her overshadowed everything else. He turned back to his parents, who watched him closely.
"I'm done with this," he said, his voice low. "I need a drink."
Without another word, he stormed out of the house, leaving his parents in stunned silence. He hopped into his car, his mind racing. The image of Elara, broken and hurt, played on repeat in his mind. But he pushed it away, focusing instead on the anger he felt toward his parents for interfering in his life.
Liam arrived at the bar, the familiar scent of whiskey and stale beer wrapping around him like a comforting blanket. He ordered a drink, slamming it down as he tried to drown out the chaos of his thoughts. He couldn't shake the feeling that everything was spiraling out of control.
Betty walked in moments later, her presence a beacon in the dimly lit bar. She made her way to him, her eyes bright and filled with mischief.
"Hey, handsome," she said, leaning in closer. "Want to forget all about your problems?"
Liam forced a smile, the weight of the world still pressing down on him. "Yeah, let's forget everything for a while."
As the night wore on, he tried to push away thoughts of Elara, but the image of her tear-streaked face haunted him, a ghost that refused to leave his mind. He wondered if he would ever find a way to make things right—or if he would forever be trapped in the mess he had created.
