Liam stood outside the church, a place he had always avoided, feeling a weight of guilt settle over him like a heavy cloak. His sister Emma's baptism was meant to be a joyous occasion, but for him, it felt like a reminder of everything he had lost. He had never been particularly religious—life to him had always been about immediate satisfaction, not faith or belief in something greater. Yet here he was, drawn to a place that felt foreign and uncomfortable.

As he entered the church, the familiar scent of polished wood and burning candles enveloped him, intensifying his unease. He scanned the room, his eyes catching the flickering candles and the stained-glass windows that cast colorful shadows on the pews. The sound of murmured prayers and quiet laughter surrounded him, creating a backdrop that felt both comforting and suffocating.

Just as he settled into his seat, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket, pulling him from his thoughts. He fished it out and answered without looking, his mind still half-occupied with guilt and confusion. It was his secretary on the other end, discussing some trivial work matter. He nodded absently, trying to focus, but his eyes were drawn back to the church.

That's when he spotted her—a girl sitting alone on a bench, her feet swinging slightly above the ground. A rush of nostalgia flooded through him, and his heart raced. It was Elara. The familiar ache in his chest flared to life, reminding him of everything he had done and all the time that had slipped away.

He couldn't believe his eyes. She looked different, yet somehow the same, her features softer but carrying a weight of experience. He felt as though the world around him had faded away, leaving only the two of them suspended in time.

The Approach

He slowly made his way toward her, each step feeling heavier than the last. His heart pounded loudly in his ears, drowning out the sounds of the church. Would she remember him? Did she even want to see him again? Doubts crept in, wrapping around him like tendrils of anxiety.

"Who's that?" a voice suddenly broke through the haze, pulling him back to reality. Liam turned to see a friend from high school, waving at him. His eyes flickered back to Elara, who seemed to sense someone approaching. She turned slightly, trying to locate the source of the voice.

In that moment, something shifted within him. The panic surged as Elara reached out, her hands brushing through the air as if searching for something—or someone. But she couldn't see him. She must have felt a presence but didn't know it was him.

Liam's breath caught in his throat. I can't move, I can't talk. His heart raced wildly, a mixture of longing and fear coursing through him. The urge to reach out and hold her surged, but he stood frozen in place. All he wanted was to hug her, to tell her how much he missed her, to feel her warmth against him. But it was as if an invisible barrier separated them.

Elara's fingers grazed the empty space, and for a fleeting moment, she paused, her face scrunching in confusion. Then, as if sensing something intangible, she shrugged it off and stood up to leave. A wave of despair washed over him. He watched helplessly as she walked away, each step echoing like a hammer striking the anvil of his heart.

The Lie

As the service commenced, Liam sat there, consumed by a whirlwind of emotions. He felt elated to have seen her, but the reality of their separation hit hard. The baptism was a blur; he couldn't concentrate on anything except the void Elara's absence left behind.

When the ceremony was over, he excused himself, lying to his parents about an important meeting. As he drove home, the streets blurred past him, the world outside his window a mere backdrop to the chaos in his mind.

I need to figure out how to approach her, he thought. He felt a flicker of hope; now that he knew where she was, he could make things right. He envisioned the moment they would reunite, the look in her eyes when she recognized him. He imagined how he would hold her and tell her everything he had wanted to say for months.

But as he drove, doubts lingered like shadows in the corners of his mind. What if she doesn't want to see me? What if she hates me? The questions gnawed at him, but the possibility of reconnecting with Elara kept his spirits buoyed.

Arriving home, he parked in the driveway and sat in his car for a moment, gathering his thoughts. He glanced back at the church, a determination igniting within him. He couldn't let this chance slip away. He would find a way to reach out to Elara, no matter how difficult it would be.

That night, as he lay in bed, he could barely sleep. His thoughts were consumed by the memories of her laughter, the warmth of her smile, and the realization that he had a second chance. All he needed was to summon the courage to act. He would not let the fear of rejection dictate his future.

Liam resolved to face whatever lay ahead with a newfound strength, knowing that finding Elara was his only path to healing the wounds he had caused.
