Elara's POV
The morning felt like any other, though something about October 20 always tugged at my heart, no matter how much I tried to ignore it. My birthday had often been quiet, but this one felt particularly heavy. Maybe it was because no one knew, or maybe it was because I felt more alone than usual in the silence of the house.
I fumbled my way into the kitchen, fingers gliding along the counter until they reached the refrigerator. I opened it, hoping to find something, anything, to mark the day. After a moment, my fingers touched something familiar—a small cheesecake Liam's mom had brought a few days ago. I hadn't planned on making a fuss, but the sight of it gave me an idea. I decided that maybe, just maybe, a small, private celebration was in order.
I found an old candle in the drawer, probably one left over from a holiday. As I held it in my hand, I smiled to myself, thinking that at least I could make a wish. I carefully placed it on the cheesecake and used my sense of touch to guide my way to a lighter. It was difficult, and I fumbled with it, but eventually, the tiny flame flickered to life, casting a gentle warmth across the kitchen.
I took a deep breath, my fingers clasped together as I made my silent wish. I wish... I wish for everything to go back to normal.
Liam's POV
I was about to head out for work when I noticed Elara standing in the kitchen, her hands carefully placing a candle on a small cheesecake. She was so focused, her face soft in the glow of the single flame she had somehow managed to light.
It hit me like a punch to the chest as I realized—today must be her birthday.
I stepped back quietly, not wanting to intrude on this rare moment she had created for herself. She looked peaceful yet a little sad, as if she were making a wish she wasn't sure would ever come true.
Watching her in that moment, I felt a mixture of awe and sadness. She was still finding ways to celebrate even when it seemed like no one else had remembered. My heart clenched with guilt and determination. This was the woman who had given me a second chance without even knowing if I deserved it, and she was here, alone, trying to find a piece of joy on her own birthday.
I made a decision right there. I slipped out the door quietly, my mind racing with ideas for the surprise I was going to plan for her that evening. I wanted to give her a moment she would remember, something to make up for all the birthdays she'd spent feeling overlooked and forgotten.
Elara's POV
After my little candle had burned down, I blew it out, feeling a bittersweet relief. The house was quiet, and though I told myself it didn't matter, a part of me still ached. I had spent so many birthdays on my own, but this one felt especially lonely.
I brushed it off, telling myself that I didn't need anything extravagant, just the small cheesecake and my wish. If anything, I just hoped for some peace, a bit of happiness, and maybe the feeling that everything could be okay again.
But even as I tried to convince myself, a small part of me kept waiting, kept hoping, that somehow things would be different this year.
Liam's POV
It was around 5 PM when I got back home, carrying a small cake and a carefully wrapped gift—a diamond necklace I'd chosen specifically for her. It wasn't just a gift, it was my way of trying to tell her, to show her, how much I wanted to be here for her. When I walked inside, I found Elara fast asleep on the sofa. She looked so peaceful, her hands resting on her chest, and I could tell that she'd tired herself out from cleaning and memorizing the layout of the house. It must be exhausting, learning how to navigate everything without sight. I felt a pang of guilt and admiration all at once—she was stronger than I could have ever imagined.
Quietly, I set down the cake and gift on the table and moved closer to her, trying not to make a sound. But as I stepped back, my foot brushed against a small box on the floor, and it made a slight noise. Elara stirred, her face suddenly tense. Her hand lifted, searching the air as if reaching for something—or someone.
In that moment, I reached out instinctively and took her hand, guiding her gently. She stiffened, her eyes widening even though they couldn't see me, a look of shock and vulnerability crossing her face. Her voice came out soft and uncertain, "W-Who's there?"
"It's me, Elara. Don't worry," I said softly, squeezing her hand gently. I could see her shoulders relax slightly, and her hand softened in mine. For a moment, it felt like the walls she'd built around her were fading, and all I wanted to do was to keep her safe.
Without thinking, I leaned forward, pulling her into a gentle hug. I wrapped my arms around her, feeling her tense at first and then slowly relax. It was our first hug, and I couldn't help but notice the warmth radiating between us. Her head fit perfectly against my shoulder, and my heartbeat felt like it was echoing through my whole body, each beat reminding me of everything I wanted to say but couldn't find the words for.
Elara's POV
I felt the world around me melt away as his arms wrapped around me. My whole body froze at first, confusion and nervousness flooding my mind. But as his warmth surrounded me, that initial fear faded into something unexplainable—a feeling that made my heart race and my cheeks burn. I couldn't see him, but I could feel every beat of his heart, strong and steady against mine. His scent, his warmth, the safety of his hold—it all felt like something I'd been missing but hadn't known I needed.
My hands, still hesitant, rested against his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart, mirroring my own. It was strange, this closeness. I wanted to lean into it, to let it melt away the loneliness I'd been carrying. But the moment felt so intense, so overwhelming, that I suddenly panicked. My heart pounded too fast, and I wasn't sure if it was from fear or something deeper, something that left me feeling unsteady.
I pushed him away gently, my face flushed and my legs feeling like they could barely hold me. "I... I'm sorry," I stammered, my voice barely more than a whisper. I didn't know what else to say, and the words hung in the air, thick with unspoken emotions.
Liam's POV
When she pulled back, I instantly felt the loss of her warmth. Her cheeks were flushed, a soft pink, and I could tell that she was just as shaken as I was. She kept her head down, her fingers nervously brushing against the sofa cushion, as if she didn't know where to go from here.
I took a deep breath, hoping to ease the awkwardness. "I'm sorry, Elara. I just... I thought you needed someone," I murmured, my voice low. I could see the conflict in her expression, her lips pressed together, her face still flushed.
After a moment, she nodded. "No, it's okay. Really... thank you," she said, her voice barely audible. The awkwardness lingered, but beneath it was something softer, a warmth that hadn't been there before.
As I watched her try to find her bearings, her fingers brushing over the edge of the sofa to steady herself, I knew that this moment would stay with me forever.
