Adrian Blackwood sat comfortably on the luxurious cream colored sofa in the Mei family's living room, legs spread, an arm draped over the backrest as a news played on the huge television hangs on the wall in front of him but he wasn't paying attention to that. His focus was on Lily, who was sprawled across the floor, playing with barbie dolls in her hands. She was dressed in pastel pajamas that were a size too big, making her looks even more adorable if possible.
"Adrian," Lily called out suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence between them. Her tone carried that unmistakable sing-song mischief that always had him on edge. "I decided I want to work."
Adrian's dark brows lifted ever so slightly, though the rest of his expression remained impassive. "Oh?"
Lily rolled onto her stomach, propping her chin in her hands as she gazed up at him. "Yup. I think it'll be fun. I could wear cute office outfits, go to fancy meetings, and have my own desk. And—" She tilted her head, a sly grin forming. "You'd be my boss."
Adrian suppressed a smirk, though his chest stirred at the thought of her in his office. The idea of Lily, who could barely sit still for five minutes, working was almost laughable, but he wouldn't dare dismiss her outright. Not when she was looking at him like that, full of excitement and childish ambition.
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Why do you want to work, baby?" His voice was soft, patient, the way it always was with her.
Lily puffed her cheeks in mock frustration. "Because! It's boring just staying home all the time. I see you always going to your fancy office looking all cool. I want to try too! You can give me a job, right? Please?"
Adrian's lips twitched. Of course, he'd give her anything she asked for. But Lily's version of 'work' was no doubt a fantasy of endless fun and games. There was no way she understood the realities of a corporate environment. Still, how could he say no to her? Even if it was purely symbolic, he'd make it happen.
"You're serious about this?" Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing slightly, though his voice stayed calm.
"Yes!" Lily said, sitting up excitedly, her brown eyes sparkling with determination. "I'll be the best employee! I'll need a big desk, though. And maybe my own assistant. You have assistants, right?"
Adrian couldn't stop himself from chuckling softly. "Yes, I do. But you don't get an assistant on your first day, baby."
She pouted, crossing her arms. "Why not? Isn't that what all important people get?"
Adrian shook his head, amused. "Let's start with the basics. If you want to work, I'll find you something easy. Something just for you."
Lily narrowed her eyes in suspicion, sensing there was a catch. "What kind of work?"
Adrian leaned back, tapping his fingers thoughtfully against his knee. "I'll find a special task that suits you. Nothing too hard. Just enough for you to have fun and learn a little."
Lily tilted her head, clearly weighing his words. "You promise I won't get bored?"
Adrian smiled indulgently. "I'll make sure you have everything you need."
That seemed to satisfy her, and she crawled up onto the sofa beside him, curling into his side. "Okay. But I get my own desk. In your office."
"Of course." Adrian wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close. "Anywhere you want, baby."
"And snacks," she added, her voice muffled as she nuzzled into his shoulder. "Good snacks. Like chocolate croissants and bubble tea."
Adrian pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "Done."
