Triton and Callisto crept quietly through the empty streets, shadows trailing long behind them under the sparse glow of the streetlights. They’d snuck away without Neptune’s or Jupiter’s permission, both a little surprised at themselves for doing something so reckless. But for now, that only made it feel more exciting, more… theirs. It was like they’d carved out this small, quiet corner of the universe just for themselves.

The chill of the late autumn night brushed against them, and Callisto hugged her arms around her jacket, glancing up at Triton with a small, playful smile. Their footsteps echoed in the empty streets, and everything around them felt almost dreamlike, with the mist hanging low and the sounds of the night softened to a gentle hum.

They walked side by side, their pace unhurried as they slipped through back alleys and hidden pathways, letting the silence linger between them. It was a comfortable silence, the kind that needed no filling, where words would only get in the way of the quiet understanding between them. Every now and then, Triton would look over, catching the soft gleam in Callisto’s eyes as she looked up at the sky, and he’d feel something tugging at his chest—a feeling he wasn’t entirely used to but found he didn’t mind.

They wandered until they found a small hill on the edge of town, overlooking a park dappled with the last of autumn’s leaves. A small bench sat under a tall, ancient tree whose branches reached out like skeletal fingers against the sky, still and quiet. Callisto brushed her fingers over the bench’s worn wood, then sat down, folding her hands in her lap and looking up at the sky. Triton joined her, sitting close enough that their shoulders touched but not saying anything.

Above them, the stars were scattered across the night like a thousand diamonds on black velvet, bright and still, as if watching over them. The air was crisp and carried the faint scent of fallen leaves, and somewhere in the distance, a lone cricket chirped, breaking the silence in soft, rhythmic pulses.

After a few minutes, Callisto spoke, her voice soft in the night air. “So… how’s that history project going?” she asked, glancing at Triton with a small smile. “Still thinking of starting it the night before?”

Triton laughed, leaning back against the bench. “Please, I have a whole weekend planned for it… the weekend before it’s due, anyway,” he replied with a smirk. “Though to be fair, I don’t see you exactly diving into your science project either.”

She rolled her eyes. “Hey, at least I’ve done research,” she defended, nudging his shoulder. “But, yeah… maybe I’m procrastinating a little. I don’t know, it just feels like every assignment right now is so… pointless. Like, what does it even matter?”

“Tell me about it,” Triton agreed, running a hand through his hair. “Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if we could just… ignore it all. Forget the projects, the grades, all the expectations, you know? Just… live.”

Callisto’s gaze drifted to the horizon, her expression thoughtful. “Yeah… like we’re all supposed to follow this path, step by step, no matter if it’s what we actually want or not,” she murmured. “Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I just… changed direction. Did something different. I don’t know, maybe it’s silly.”

“It’s not silly,” Triton said quietly, glancing over at her. “I think about that all the time. Like, who would I be if I didn’t have to fit into all the roles Neptune expects of me? Maybe even if I could just… be somewhere else. With different people.”

She looked at him, studying his face, as if seeing something there she hadn’t quite noticed before. “You mean… you don’t like the people around you?”

“No, I mean…” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “It’s not that I don’t like them. It’s just… I feel like I have to be a certain way with them. Put on this face, make them laugh, not get too close. But sometimes I just want to… I don’t know, be myself.” His gaze flicked to her, almost shyly. “You know, without worrying if I’m meeting everyone’s expectations.”
