Chapter 19
Annaleise's POV
I sucked in my already hitched breath at the sound of his voice. It was so calm, so calculating, so drawling and so beautiful. Gah! Get a GRIP Anna! Now is not the time! Maybe in the 'underworld' I'll be able to turn into a ghost and come back to haunt him... so many possibilities. With my eyes still shut, I felt my face form into a small grin. Luckily, he couldn't see because he was standing behind me. My fingers were starting to go numb gripping onto the railing, and my arms were beginning to grow weak. My shaking legs continued to shake as I edged them closer to the very edge. The feriocious wind blew back my hair, and the breeze made my eyelids feel cold. I heard birds chirping and the breeze ruffle the trees again. So peaceful.
"Snape, get down. You're ruining my free period, and I only get free periods every once a week!" Malfoy called impatiently. I smiled again. So like Draco to think about himself at a time like this. As a response, I shook my head slowly from side to side, stepping a tiny bit further to the edge until I felt my toes curl around the thin ledge. I heard him sigh quietly before I heard soft footsteps walk towards me. Without warning, I felt a warm breath on my cheek and he whispered softly in my ear, "Annaleise, it would be a waste to lose someone as rare as you." Tears stung behind my closed eyelids. He would miss me. Or is he just saying that? My bottom lip wobbled at the thought of dying and leaving him behind. He was like... a soulmate I'd never had the courage to talk to. And now I was going.
"Goodbye" I whispered to him in my high, strained voice, and removed my hands from the rails, and jumped. I heard him scream as my feet left the floor. I opened my eyes as I felt myself falling, with my back facing the ground. I watched Draco Malfoy for the last time. He deserves better than me, maybe a princess? Even that wouldn't be enough. I watched as his figure went higher and higher, until it was a tiny speck in the sky above me. I would hit the floor soon. I hope I die quickly. The roar in my ears had slowly become bearable, and my hair whipping my face had become softer too. Tears slowly dribbled down my face. I looked up at the sky. The purple and orange clouds seemed inviting. Comforting, even. I'd be joining them soon. I smiled and whispered "Goodbye world, I love you" before a bright light surrounded me, my back hit something extremely hard and painful, and my world fell to become nothing.
*****Draco's POV*****
I watched her fall. My arms still stretched out in front of me in an attempt to pull her back to safety. I was too late. Her perfect hair matched the beautiful sunrise, blowing wildly in her face as she fell rapidly to Earth. Then something clicked into place I should have realised the minute we met. The first time I had seen her, I felt something, like a connection maybe. I should have been nicer to her, she was always nice to me. Always. Even though she liked to hang out with them I should have at least made an effort to talk to her. Now I'm stuck with that Slytherin wannabe Melissa and.. shudder... Pansy Parkinson. My lips betrayed me by yelling out "No!" as she fell to the ground. I felt like closing my eyes, but they refused to close. I would be the one to witness her death. Just when she was close to the ground, her hand glowed so bright I had to blink a few times while watching. The glow flew underneath her and Annaleise landed on top of it, heavily. I could still see the ground below her. It was like that invisible shield I saw her make when she was running. Fascinating. The only trouble was she was hovering above the ground, unconcious, with no way of getting down. My breath stuck in my throat. I quickly leant over the edge to see her, then sprinted towards where Dumbledore and the others were stuck behind the shield covering the corridor. Dumbledore and Professor Snape were the first ones to notice me. I quickly pointed to the exit behind them and motioned for them to go. Snape was the quickest to realise and, with a swish of his black robe, ran outside, being followed by Dumby and the other students, who were looking curiously at me and had looks of fear plastered all over their faces. I hope I was quick enough. I put my blank poker-face on when Potter and his little gang looked my way and quickly strided over back to the Astronomy Tower. I hope she is ok, and survives. From what my father and mother have told me, people in the James coven are rare. I honestly don't know what life would be like without her. Waaiitt.. did I just think that? It must be the events that have happened.. I'm a Malfoy, I can't fall for someone like her. My brain must be muddled. Yeah, muddled.
