Chapter 29

Annaleise's POV

I woke with a groan as the harsh sunlight flooded through my eyelids. A chilly wind blew through the open window and birds chirped in the trees. Can someone shut the bloody curtains?

"Anna! You're up!" A voice squealed from across the room. Ignoring the voice, I gave another, louder, groan of frustration and smashed my face into my pillow, blocking out most light in the room. "Get up Anna! Guess what day it is. Anna? Annaleise!"

"Leave me alone Mione." I whined into my pillow. "Five more minutes."

"No." There was a suspicious pause, and I could imagine her face screwed up in concentration as she tried to think of a threat to give me if I don't get out of bed. "Merlin's beard!" She suddenly screeched.

"What!" I yelled back, immediately sitting up and jumping out of bed. I snatched my wand off of the bedside table and whirled around in a circle, my wand humming in my hand.

"Put your wand down, you idiot." Hermione smirked, her hands on her hips and already fully dressed in our school robes, as well as having her unruly hair scraped back into a tight ponytail at the back of her head. "There's nothing there for you to attack."

A scowl formed on my face as I faced my friend. "I really do hate you."

"You love me really." She smiled. "Now, since you're up, you need to get ready for breakfast. Everyone's expected to be there today."

An image of that boy with the white-blonde hair and those penetrating grey eyes flashed in my head. "Everyone? Are you serious?"

"Yeah." She agreed distractedly as she wandered over to my trunk and rummaged through my clothes. I blinked blearily and rubbed my eyes tiredly, slowly waking up. I began to walk over to the window, planning on staring out over the grounds to see if I saw Dawn and Pheonix flying around, but Hermione stopped me. "Aha!" She cried, pulling out a skirt and tank top. "Put these on under you're robes."

I agreed silently with a nod of my head and quickly pulled off my pajamas and pulled on my clothes.   Hermione was busy flipping through her books so I walked over to the nearest mirror and looked at my hair. Oh god, it looks like a bird's nest. "Hermione, what do you think I should do with my hair?"

Her head snapped up as she scrutinized my hair. After a minute, she finally made a decision. "Leave it down." I shot her a pointed look from over my shoulder and she returned my look with a grin. "Alright then, tie it up in a high bun."

I said my thanks and carefully piled my hair on top of my head before twisting it into a bun and pinning it down. "So, what day is it today Mione? Wait, let me guess... we have a test!" I said sarcastically to Hermione, who had slung her bag full of books over her shoulder and was looking eager to get out of the dorm.

Her eyes narrowed at me and she looked ready to fire a sly remark at me, but she was interrupted by the door being flung open and crashing against the wall. My head whipped around to see who had opened it, and there stood a panting, out-of-breath Padma Patil. "Guys!" She called breathlessly, "You'd never guess what's happening down there! There's floating pumpkins in the Great Hall!"

Ah, Halloween.

"I know." Hermione said smugly. "I read about it in Hogwarts: A History. For Halloween, there is always floating pumpkins and candles. I just can't wait until dinner, the decorations are always-"

I cut her off with a roll of my eyes. "I know. I grew up here. Now, can we go down to breakfast? I'm hungry."

Padma gave me a startled look, like she had only just realized I was actually standing here. "I haven't seen you around lately."

"Yeah, well, I'm back now." I told her awkwardly, reaching down to get my converses. As soon as I had tied them,  I made a beeline for the door, Hermione hot on my heels.

"Shouldn't you be in Slytherin? You know, being You-Know-Who's daughter and all..." She said casually, but I could still hear the tremble of fear in her voice.

I stopped, shocked, in the middle of the hallway. The girls chatting casually in the hallway stopped talking and there was a cold silence through the girl's dorms. I could feel every eye on me, and my hands started to shake. "No." I said, my anger steadily growing. How dare they think that I take after Voldemort! "No, I shouldn't be in Slytherin. I'm not evil, you know."

Muted whispers filled the halls. I caught an older girl, probably in fifth or sixth year, whispering to her friend. "Yeah, but she's half evil." Small snickers followed.

"No, I'm not." I said calmly, coldly. "I'm just like you, really." I began to walk in the girl slowly, my sights set on her. Like a predator on prey. "My last name is Snape, isn't it? I'm actually Professor Snape's daughter. I'm in Gryffindor. But unlike you," I stopped when I was in front of her, staring up into her big amber, worried eyes. "I just have a few extra.." I pretended to ponder over the right word to say. "Gifts."

"Annaleise." Hermione hissed, coming forward, breaking the eery silence and stepping forward, clutching on to my arm. "We have to go."

I stumbled as she dragged me quickly down the steps, into the near empty commonroom. I tried to pull my arm away from her tight grip, but each time I tried, her grip would get incredibly stronger. On one particularly hard pull, I protested. "Hey! Let go already! I know how to walk Hermione."

She continued to ignore me as she pulled me through the portrait hole and into the corridors. Suddenly, she pulled me to an abrupt stop, her nails digging into my skin. "What was that?" She questioned, calm and collected.

"What was what?" I fired back, a frown on my face.

"You know." She hissed, her voice dropping to a whisper as a couple of students walked past.

"You wanna know?" I asked her, my temper dropping and I had the sudden urge to run. "I'm fed up of people treating me like shit and I'm done. Totally done." I told her, yanking my arm away from her and walking down the hall.

I was thankful she didn't decide to follow me as I walked away, and my mood certainly improved when I bumped into Peeves.

"PEEVES!" I yelled at the poltergeist who was currently cackling at some older students while throwing chalk at them. "PEEVES!"

"Annaleise!" He crowed happily and zoomed towards me, dropping all the chalk in his arms. The older students sent me a grateful smile, but when they realized it was me, their looks changed from grateful to afraid, and they went running in the opposite direction. How charming.

"How's my best friend been?" I questioned, smirking.

When he reached me, he quickly picked me up and flung me on to his shoulders, just like old times. "I'm good." He cackled.

"Well then, do you wanna wreck some havoc around the school?" I questioned as we floated slowly towards the Great Hall.

"You shouldn't have to ask." He laughed.

"Just making sure." I laughed back, "So, what do you wanna do? Plan A, B, C or D?"

"I think we should do Plan C. It has more of a... boom... to it." He snickered before taking off in the direction of our secret headquarters.
