Hoseok walked down the dimly lit sidewalk, the cool night air brushing against his face. It had been a long shift, and he was more than ready to get home and rest. The streets were almost empty at this hour, with only the distant hum of passing cars breaking the silence.
Just as he was about to cross to the next block, he noticed an older man, probably in his sixties, standing beside an expensive car with the hood open. Thick smoke billowed from the engine, and the man coughed, stepping back in frustration.
Without hesitation, Hoseok jogged over, his instinct to help kicking in immediately. As he approached, he offered the man a warm smile and a polite bow. “Good evening, sir. Is everything all right? Do you need any help?”
The man looked at him, eyes weary but relieved, and returned the greeting with a small smile. “Ah, thank you, young man. I was on my way home when the car just stopped, and now… well, this happened.” He gestured to the smoking engine with a sigh. “To make things worse, there’s no signal in this area to call my chauffeur.”
Hoseok nodded in understanding. “This part of town usually doesn’t have good signal. It can be tough getting a call through here.”
The man nodded, resigned, as Hoseok set down his backpack and stepped closer to the car. “Let me take a look,” he offered, rolling up his sleeves.
The man watched as Hoseok assessed the situation, his gaze focused on the engine. Thankfully, the smoke had stopped, though the metal was still hot to the touch. Hoseok tilted his head thoughtfully. “It looks like the engine might have overheated,” he murmured.
He walked back to his bag and pulled out a half-filled bottle of water. As he twisted off the cap, the man raised a brow. “What are you doing?” he asked, clearly skeptical.
Hoseok gave him a reassuring smile. “Trust me, sir. This should help.”
The man hesitated, then gave a reluctant nod, watching as Hoseok poured the water carefully into the radiator compartment. A sizzling sound rose up as the water met the hot metal, and Hoseok nodded to himself, pleased with the result.
He glanced up at the man, who had stepped closer out of curiosity. “This compartment needs water regularly to keep the engine cool,” Hoseok explained. “If it’s too dry, the engine can overheat, especially on long drives.”
The man listened with a look of mild surprise. Once Hoseok was done, he carefully closed the compartment and lowered the hood. “Go ahead and give it a try now,” Hoseok said, stepping back.
The man nodded, walking to the driver’s side door and slipping into the car. He turned the key in the ignition, and the engine roared to life. With a look of surprise, he turned it off and stepped back out. “It worked! That’s impressive. Are you a mechanic?”
Hoseok chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. “No, not really. Just picked up a few things here and there.”
The man nodded thoughtfully, smiling as he studied Hoseok. “You’re a very helpful young man. What’s your name?”
“Hoseok,” he answered politely, giving another small bow.
“Hoseok,” the man repeated, as if testing the name. “Well, thank you, Hoseok. You’ve been a big help tonight.” He paused, reaching into his pocket. “Would you mind if I got your number?”
Hoseok hesitated, his brows furrowing slightly, but he didn’t want to seem rude, so he took out his phone and exchanged numbers with the man.
Once the number was saved, the man nodded in satisfaction. “Thank you again, Hoseok.”
“You’re welcome,” Hoseok replied with a smile, turning to continue his walk home.
As Hoseok’s figure faded into the distance, the man sat back in his seat, watching him through the rearview mirror. With a mysterious glint in his eye, he whispered to himself, “Perfect.” Then, he put the car in gear and drove off into the night.
