The car pulled to a stop in front of Hoseok’s modest home, the headlights casting long shadows across the yard. The old man, who had insisted on driving him home, stepped out first, his gaze lingering on the small, worn-down house. He tried to mask his discomfort, but the slight hesitation in his eyes revealed it clearly. This was a far cry from the life he was accustomed to.
Hoseok noticed the man’s reaction, chuckling nervously as he scratched the back of his neck. “This is… what my parents can afford,” he said apologetically.
The man merely shrugged. “It’s alright,” he replied, though the forced smile suggested otherwise.
Hoseok led him to the door, stepping forward to open it. The moonlight spilled into the narrow hallway as they entered, and Hoseok gently closed the door behind them. His gaze fell on his parents, both sprawled in the living room, glued to the television—a daily ritual he’d grown used to.
Hoseok’s father turned, noticing his son and the stranger at the door. His brows furrowed as he stood, a hint of suspicion crossing his face. His wife, slightly obscured behind him, leaned forward to get a better look, curiosity sparking in her eyes.
“Hoseok, who’s this?” his father asked, his tone gruff.
Before Hoseok could answer, the man stepped forward, extending his hand with a polite smile. “Mr. and Mrs. Jung,” he began, “my name is Jinseok Kim.”
Hoseok’s father eyed the man’s hand, taking in the tailored suit, fine leather shoes, and gleaming wristwatch. Everything about this stranger radiated wealth. Begrudgingly, he reached out to shake Jinseok’s hand, his expression softening as he registered the man’s unmistakable affluence.
Hoseok’s mother, who had been watching in silence, gasped softly when she heard the surname. She stood quickly, pointing a trembling finger. “Wait… are you the Mr. Kim?”
Jinseok’s lips twitched in a small smile, and he gave a slight nod. Hoseok and his father looked between them, thier confusion growing. “What’s going on?” hoseok asked, glancing at his mother for an explanation.
“Hoseok,” his mother said breathlessly, “Mr. Kim is one of the most successful businessmen in all of South Korea—and globally. His company has branches everywhere in the world!”
A glint sparked in Hoseok’s father’s eyes at the mention of wealth, and he turned back to Jinseok, his grip on the man’s hand tightening slightly. “Successful businessman?” he murmured, his tone softening further. He held onto Jinseok’s hand as though reluctant to let go.
Noticing the awkwardness, Hoseok whispered, “Father…” before gently but firmly prying their hands apart. He gave Jinseok an apologetic look. “I’m sorry about that,” he murmured.
Jinseok chuckled, brushing it off with a wave. “No harm done.” Hoseok’s mother, however, was still in awe, and she couldn’t resist asking, “What brings someone like you here?”
Jinseok smiled warmly, placing a hand on Hoseok’s shoulder. “Your son,” he replied, looking directly at them. “He’s a good, humble person. Last night, he went out of his way to help me when he should have been heading home. That says a lot about his character.”
A look of pride softened Hoseok’s father’s face, and he stepped closer to ruffle Hoseok’s hair almost affectionately. “That’s our son,” he chuckled. “Always showing the best example. We raised him well, didn’t we?”
Hoseok groaned, quickly smoothing his hair back down as he shot his father an unimpressed look. Jinseok continued, his smile growing as he looked from Hoseok to his parents.
“The reason I came here,” Jinseok began, his voice calm and measured, “is because I have an offer for him.”
Hoseok’s mother’s eyes sparkled with interest, and she leaned forward. “What kind of offer?”
Jinseok’s gaze turned to Hoseok, his expression one of gentle encouragement. “I’d like him,” he said, his voice clear and deliberate, “to marry my son's.”
Three gasps echoed around the room as Hoseok stepped back, eyes wide in disbelief. “W-what?” he stuttered, his face flushed with shock.
Jinseok remained silent, waiting for the proposal to sink in as he regarded Hoseok with a calm, knowing smile.
